The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the Zang-Fu organs and serve as the external manifestation of the Liver. In the context of Shanghan (Cold Damage), heat-toxin pathogens stagnate within the body, steaming and scorching the Liver, and attacking upwards to the eyes, resulting in redness, swelling, and pain of the eyes. If the toxic qi is vigorous, it may cause the formation of nebulae (corneal opacities or neovascularization) in the eyes.
For treating Shanghan heat-toxin where qi attacks the eyes causing dim vision, tearing, astringency and pain under the eyelids, with symptoms gradually worsening, the Maidong San (Ophiopogon Powder) formula is suitable.
