Whenever sores appear on the body, they are caused by Wind-Heat pathogenic factors. However, individuals with deficiency are prone to invasion by external pathogens. If severely exposed to Cold-Wind again, Cold Qi enters the sore, causing blood stasis and impaired circulation. Consequently, the sore becomes hard, cold, and insensate (loss of pain and itch sensation), and it is difficult to heal over a long period. This condition is named "Cold Sore" (Leng Chuang).
For treating chronic Cold Sores that fail to heal, use Wuyi San Powder Formula.
Herbs: Myristica Seed (Wuyi, 1 liang, lightly stir-fried), Veratrum Rhizome (Lilu, 1 liang, remove rhizome head), Realgar (Xunhuang, 0.5 liang), Green Vitriol (Qingfan, 0.5 liang), Realgar (Xionghuang, 0.5 liang, finely ground), Sophora Root (Kushen, 3 fen, chopped), Aconite Root (Fuzi, 3 fen, processed until cracked, skin and umbilical scar removed).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the above herbs and sieve them into powder. First, wash the sore with warm water to remove scabs, then dry thoroughly. Mix the powder with raw sesame oil and apply to the affected area.
For treating Cold Sores characterized by intermittent pain and continuous purulent discharge, promoting tissue regeneration, use Oyster Shell Powder Formula (Wuzeiyu Gu San).
Herbs: Cuttlefish Bone (Wuzeiyu Gu, 1 liang, burned until smoke ceases), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 1 fen, remove roots), Areca Nut (Binglang, 1 piece), Chebula Fruit Peel (Helile Pi, 1 fen), White Dragon Bone (Bailonggu, 1.5 qian), Red Kaolin (Chishizhi), Musk (Shexiang, 1 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the above herbs and sieve them into a fine powder. In a mortar, mix Musk, Dragon Bone, and Red Kaolin, grinding them evenly. For each application, first wash the sore with warm saline solution, dry it, and then apply the powder. Use twice daily.
For treating persistent Cold Sores, use the Highly Effective Areca Nut Powder Formula (Shenxiao Binglang San).
Herbs: Areca Nut (Binglang, 0.5 liang), Licorice Root (Gancao, 0.5 liang, chopped), Turmeric Tuber (Yujin, 0.5 liang), Aucklandia Root (Muxiang, 0.5 liang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 0.5 liang, remove roots), Musk (Shexiang, 1 fen, finely ground).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the above herbs and sieve them into a fine powder, mixing evenly. Place a small amount of Arsenic Trioxide (Pishuang) directly onto the sore, then cover with the powder mixed with raw sesame oil. If there is purulent discharge, sprinkle the dry powder directly onto the lesion and bandage as usual. Change the dressing twice daily.
For treating Cold Sores with unceasing pain.
Herbs: Cnidium Fruit (Shechuangzi, 1 liang), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 0.5 liang), Shallot Bulb (Xiebai, appropriate amount).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the first two herbs into powder, add Xiebai, and pound together until the consistency is suitable for topical application. Apply to the sore.
For treating chronic Wind-Cold Sores with pain accumulated over years, this formula is recommended.
Herbs: Musk (Shexiang, 2 fen or 1 fen), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 1 fen), Dragon Bone (Longgu, 1 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Finely grind all the above herbs. Use yellow beeswax; determine the amount based on the size of the sore. Melt the wax in a pot until it resembles soft dough, mix in the herbal powder, and apply while hot to the sore. Healing can be expected within no more than three liang of treatment.
For treating Cold Sores with intermittent pain occurring day and night, use Aconite Powder Formula (Fuzi San).
Herbs: Aconite Root (Fuzi, 0.5 liang, processed until cracked, skin and umbilical scar removed), Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao, 1 fen, remove seeds/eyes), Alum (Baifan, 3 fen, burned until liquid evaporates, finely ground), Calomel (Nifen), Realgar (Xionghuang, 1 fen, finely ground).
Preparation and Administration: Pound Fuzi and Chuanjiao into powder. Then add Baifan, Nifen, and Xionghuang, mixing evenly. For each application, mix with pure sesame oil to an appropriate consistency and apply to the sore. Change twice daily.
Another Formula.
