When malaria persists for a long time without healing, both the exterior and interior are deficient. The pathogenic factors have not dispersed, Qi and Blood are weak, and the True Qi fails to recover. Due to unceasing chills and fever, food and drink intake gradually decrease, muscles become emaciated, complexion becomes sallow, and the four limbs lack strength; thus it is called "Labor Malaria" (Lao Nüe).
To treat Labor Malaria with emaciation of the four limbs and loss of appetite, use Hengshan Yinzi Decoction.
