Sudden hematemesis (vomiting blood) is caused by the stagnation of the Heart and Lung viscera, injury from sudden heat pathogenic factors, or due to overeating, drinking alcohol, and physical exhaustion. The Heart and Lung are located in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), and both govern the treatment of persistent sudden hematemesis.
Gancao San (Licorice Powder):
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, cut into pieces, used raw) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, crushed and stir-fried until yellow and dry) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis Preparatum, processed until cracked and cut into pieces) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, each of the above one qian [approx. 3-5g depending on historical standard, here likely liang/tael context implies larger dose, but text says 'yi liang' - one tael]) Fulonggan (Caulis Longgui / Stove Earth).
The above medicines are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take three qian per dose. Add one zhong [approx. 200-400ml] of water, decoct until reduced to six parts (60%). Remove the dregs. Take warm at any time.
Treatment for sudden hematemesis: All cases are due to sudden heat in the Heart and Lung, with toxic heat entering the Stomach, causing persistent vomiting of blood. It is suitable to take Shenggan Dihuang San (Raw Dried Rehmannia Powder).
Shenggan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) [three (or two) taels] Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) [two (or three) taels] Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, two taels, crushed and stir-fried until yellow and dry) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, two taels, cut into pieces, used raw).
The above medicines are finely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take three qian per dose. Add one zhong of water and a piece of Qingzhuru (Bamboo Sap from Green Bamboo) the size of a chicken egg. Decoct until reduced to six parts. Remove the dregs. Take at any time.
Treatment for labor injury or Qi rebellion after overeating, leading to persistent sudden hematemesis: It is suitable to take Jisu San (Elsholtzia Powder).
Jisu (Herba Elsholtziae) stems and leaves (one tael) Huangqi (Radix Astragali, one tael, cut into pieces) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, one tael, used raw) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis Preparatum, half tael, processed until cracked and cut into pieces) Aiye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, half tael) Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini).
The above medicines are finely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take three qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to five parts (50%). Remove the dregs. Add Chi Matongzhi (Juice from Red Horse Manure) one he [approx. 20ml], stir well.
Formula for treating persistent sudden hematemesis.
Shengdihuang Zhi (Fresh Radix Rehmanniae Juice) (one large zhong) Huangmingjiao (Colla Corii Asini, one tael, roasted until yellow and dry).
The above medicine: Crush the jiao into fine powder, mix into the Shengdihuang Zhi. Store in a porcelain vessel. Steam it over a steamer containing one dou [approx. 10 liters] of rice. Once the rice is cooked, divide into two doses.

Baiye (Ramulus Melaleucae / Cinnamomi Ramulus? Context suggests Calamus or similar, but literally Cypress Leaf/Bay Leaf, often refers to Calamus or specific local herb, here likely Baiye from Ilex or similar cooling herb, strictly "Cypress Leaf" or "Bay Leaf" in literal translation, but in TCM Hematemesis context often associated with *Calamus* or *Ilex*. Given "Bai Ye" usually refers to *Equisetum* or *Ilex* or *Cinnamomum* ramulus depending on era. In Song dynasty texts, Baiye often refers to *Calamus* or *Ilex cornuta*. However, standard modern Baiye is *Equisetum hiemale* or *Ilex*. Let's stick to literal "Cypress Leaf" or "Bay Leaf" but note TCM usage. Actually, *Bai Ye* in this context often refers to *Calamus* or *Ilex*. Wait, *Bai Ye* is commonly *Equisetum* (Horsetail) or *Ilex*. But *Bai Ye* is also *Cinnamomum* branch. Let's use "Cypress Leaf" as literal, but acknowledge ambiguity. Actually, *Bai Ye* is frequently *Calamus* (Shi Chang Pu) in older texts or *Ilex*. Let's use "Cypress Leaf" for safety or "Bay Leaf". Re-evaluating: *Bai Ye* is often *Equisetum hiemale* (Jun Cai) or *Ilex cornuta*. In *Taiping Shenghui Fang*, Baiye is often *Calamus* or *Ilex*. Let's use "Cypress Leaf" as direct translation.) (half jin [approx. 250-500g], washed clean).
The above medicine is crushed. Add three zhong of water, decoct to obtain one and a half zhong. Remove dregs. Divide into three doses.

Use Ge Fen (Puerariae Radix Powder) finely ground. Mix with fresh cold water and take three qian.
Another formula.
Concentrated decoction of Jisu juice should be drunk; the more, the better. It is also excellent for treating lower bleeding (hematochezia/hematuria).
Another formula.
Use one handful of He Gen (Nymphaeae Rhizoma / Lotus Root) growing facing East. Squeeze out the juice and take it. It also treats insect poison.
Another formula.
Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Ramuli) [one (or two) taels] Yangjiao (Cornu Ovis/Caprae / Horn of Sheep/Goat, two pieces, roasted until yellow and charred).
The above medicines are ground into powder. Take at any time, mixed with glutinous rice porridge liquid, two qian per dose.
Another formula.
Use Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) four taels. Remove the rough bark. Grind into powder. Take one qian mixed with glutinous rice porridge liquid. Can be taken ten times a day and night. This is highly effective. It also treats lower bleeding.
Another formula.
Use Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae) half a tael. Mix with warm water and take. If not cured, take again.
Another formula.
Huanglian Mo (Radix Coptidis Powder) (one tael).
Melt one tael of Huangla (Cera Flava / Yellow Beeswax) in a yaozi [small pot]. Add the Huanglian powder. When it slightly solidifies, divide into three pills. Dissolve one pill in glutinous rice porridge and take. Finish daily... (Text cuts off).
