Fa Nao (Brain Abscess/Carbuncle) arises from the disharmony of the Six Fu Organs, obstruction and stagnation of the meridians, and the failure of Qi and Blood to circulate, leading to accumulation and knotting. This is generally caused by the accumulation of Heat-Toxin within the Zang-Fu organs, or a history of ingesting Ru Shi (Mineral Drugs).
If Fa Nao is not treated promptly by puncturing acupoints to drain pus, after the pus is discharged, pain and distension may worsen. Heat may disturb the brain, causing sensations as if chariots and horses were moving, with unbearable pain. In such cases, Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) should be used.
Formula:
Xijiao Xie (Powdered Rhinoceros Horn, 1 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, 1 liang, sliced), Chuan Shengma (Radix Bupleuri, 1 liang), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae, 1 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, raw, sliced), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 fen, sliced), Chuan Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 liang).
Preparation: Pound and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain and take warm at any time. If the sore has not yet ulcerated, this formula is highly effective.
For treating Fa Nao and carbuncles accompanied by visceral stagnation, restlessness, dry mouth, cold feet with chills, headache, vomiting, retching, and inability to eat, use Gegen San (Kudzu Root Powder).
Formula:
Gegen (Radix Puerariae, 1 liang, sliced), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liang, heart removed), Weirui (Rhizoma Polygonati, 3 fen), Xijiao Xie (Powdered Rhinoceros Horn, 0.5 liang), Qini (Radix Adenophorae, 1 liang), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 3 fen), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 fen), Hongxue (Red Snow, 2 liang).
Preparation: Coarsely sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain, add Ban Zhulü (Bamboo Juice, 0.5 he), boil once more. Take warm at any time.
For treating Fa Nao with red, swollen, painful sores accompanied by irritability, use Chenxiang San (Agarwood Powder).
Formula:
Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, 3 fen), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liang, heart removed), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae, 1 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang, raw, sliced), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii, 1 liang, bran-fried, pith removed), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 1 liang).
Preparation: Coarsely sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating Fa Nao with severe swelling, pain, and heat that is unbearable, use Huangqin San (Scutellaria Root Powder).
Formula:
Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1.5 liang, sliced), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Heart, 1 liang), Digupi (Cortex Lycii, 1 liang), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liang, heart removed), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 1 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang), Chuan Shengma (Radix Bupleuri, 1 liang), Shegan (Rhizoma Belamcandae, 1 liang), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae, 1 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang, raw, sliced).
Preparation: Pound and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating Fa Nao and all types of Heat-Toxin causing hard, swollen, painful knots, and for unblocking visceral stagnation, use Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill).
Formula:
Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 2 liang, sliced, soaked in vinegar for the duration of a meal, drained, slow-fired until cooked), Binglang (Semen Arecae, 1 liang), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow, pith removed), Qianniu Zi (Semen Pharbitidis, 2.5 liang, lightly fried, half raw), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, 0.5 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, raw, sliced), Zaojia (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, 5 tings, non-bitten, crushed, soaked in one bowl of wine).
Preparation: Pound and sieve into fine powder. Extract juice from Zaojia, simmer slowly in a silver pot until it becomes a paste. Mix with the powder, pound over a hundred times. Form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills before meals with Cong Cha (Green Tea with Scallion), stopping when bowel movement becomes smooth.
For treating early-stage Fa Nao with initial knotting, pain, oppression, and impending carbuncle formation, use a formula to resolve it internally.
Formula:
Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras, 2 liang), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, 1 liang, sliced), Zitan Xiang (Lignum Santali Rubrum, 1 liang), Tingli Zi (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, 1 liang), Bailian (Rhizoma Bletillae, 1 liang), Mangcao (Herba Siegesbeckiae, 1 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 3 liang).
Preparation: Pound and sieve into fine powder. When using, mix appropriately with Jiangshui (Fermented Rice Water), apply to the swelling. Change when dry.
To extract toxins from Fa Nao sores, apply Yangtao Gen San (Yangtao Root Powder).
Formula:
Yangtao Gen (Radix Actinidia Polystachyae, 1 liang, sliced), Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras, 1 liang), Tianlinggai (Os Cranium Humanum, 0.5 liang, fired slowly until smoke ceases), Hanshuishi (Armeniacum, 1 liang), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, 0.5 liang), Bailian (Rhizoma Bletillae, 0.5 liang).
Preparation: Pound and sieve into fine powder. Mix with clear water to form a paste. Spread on coarse cloth and apply. Change when dry. Within five to seven applications, healing occurs when itching begins.
For treating Brain Carbuncle and Heat-Toxin sores, apply Huanglian Bing (Coptis Cake).
Formula:
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 liang), Ruxiang (Resina Frankincense, 1 liang), Xunlu Xiang (Resina Olibanum, 1 liang), Xiong Que Fen (Excrement of Male Sparrow, 49 grains, sharp and fine ones preferred).
Preparation: Pound and sieve into powder. Use Manjing Gen (Radix Viticis, 2 liang), wash clean, filter water, cut finely, and pound into mud. If swelling is severe, add Shukui Gen (Radix Malvae, 2 liang). Mix with the four herbs above. Store in a porcelain vessel. Shape into cakes about 2 fen thick and apply to the affected area.
For treating Fa Nao and early-stage Breast Carbuncle with knotting and pain, use Zhusha Gao (Cinnabar Paste).
Formula:
Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 liang), Ruxiang (Resina Frankincense, 0.5 liang).
Preparation: Grind together into powder. Cut 4 liang of Congbai (White Part of Allium Fistulosum) finely and grind with the powder to form a paste. Apply on raw silk. Reapply when dry until healed.
For treating Fa Nao nodules and swelling to relieve pain, use Zhitong San (Pain-Relieving Powder).
