The throat and pharynx are the passages for the flow of Qi (vital energy) and body fluids, and the pathways for the Lung and Spleen meridians. Respiration enters and exits, and food and drink pass through; nothing does not go through the throat and pharynx. If Yin and Yang are disharmonious, causing swelling and pain in the throat and pharynx, it is all due to Heat pathogen residing in the Lung and Spleen, with evil toxins stagnating and obstructing, leading to poor circulation in the chest and heart. It is appropriate to take the Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) formula.
Rhino Horn Shavings (1 liang), Belamcanda Rhizome (2 liang), Red Peony Root (1 liang), Apricot Seed (2 liang, soaked in decoction, skin and pointed ends removed, using pairs, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Antelope Horn (1 liang).
The above medicines are coarsely pounded and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, boiled with one large cup of water and half a he of fermented soybean (Douchi), simmered until only two-fifths of the liquid remains. Strain out the dregs. Take at any time.
For treating Wind-Toxin attacking the throat and pharynx, causing swelling and pain, making it impossible to swallow water or gruel, it is appropriate to take the Yeguan San (Belamcanda Powder) formula.
Belamcanda Rhizome (1 liang), Red Peony Root (1 liang), Cimicifuga Rhizome (2 liang), Apricot Seed (1.5 liang, soaked in decoction, skin and pointed ends removed, using pairs, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Arctium Fruit (1 liang), Liquidambar Fructus (1 liang), Kudzu Root (2 liang, chopped), Ephedra Stem (1 liang, root and nodes removed), Licorice Root (2 liang, honey-fried until slightly red, chopped).
The above medicines are coarsely pounded and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, boiled with one medium cup of water until three-fifths of the liquid remains. Strain out the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treating Wind-Toxin in the throat and pharynx, causing swelling, blockage, and pain, use the Niuhuang San (Calculus Bovis Powder) formula.
Calculus Bovis (1 liang, slightly stir-fried), Borneol (1 fen, finely ground), Pearl Powder (3 fen), Gold Leaf (50 pieces), Lead Frost (1 fen), Rhino Horn Powder (1 fen).
The above medicines are all ground to an extremely fine powder. For each dose, mix 1 qian with half a cup of freshly drawn cold water and ingest. Take 5 to 7 times daily. If used for gargling, use half a qian, swallowing the saliva is also acceptable.
For treating Wind-Toxin in the throat and pharynx, as well as acute throat closure causing swelling and pain, making it impossible to swallow liquids, it is appropriate to use the Longnao Wan (Borneol Pill) formula.
Borneol (0.5 liang), Cinnabar (0.5 liang), Calculus Bovis (0.5 liang), Salt (0.5 liang), Musk (1 qian), Niter (1 fen).
The above medicines are all finely ground. Take one large sheep gallbladder, extract its juice, and use it to bind the medicine into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Spread them on paper to dry, and store in a porcelain vessel.
For treating Wind-Toxin in the throat and pharynx causing swelling and pain, incessant irritability and heat, and stiffness in the four limbs, it is appropriate to take the Mayaxiao Wan (Niter Pill) for dissolving in the mouth.
Niter (3 fen, finely ground), Rhino Horn Shavings (1 fen), Cimicifuga Rhizome (0.5 liang), Licorice Root (1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red, chopped), Pearl Powder (1 fen).
The above medicines are pounded and sifted into powder. Mix evenly with the previously ground medicines. Bind with refined honey into pills the size of cocklebur fruits. Each dose is one pill, held in the mouth to dissolve and swallowed with saliva.
For treating Wind-Toxin from the Lung and Spleen attacking upwards, causing swelling, heat, and obstruction in the throat and pharynx:
Belamcanda Rhizome (2 liang), Cimicifuga Rhizome (1.5 liang), Akebia Stem (1 liang), Antelope Horn Shavings (1 liang), Red Peony Root (1 liang), Rose Root Bark (1 liang).
The above medicines are finely chopped. Wrap in cotton cloth, soak in one sheng of vinegar overnight. Add Rehmannia Juice and Pig Fat, and simmer over low heat until the vinegar is exhausted but the fat does not boil.
For treating Wind-Toxin attacking the throat and pharynx, as well as swelling and pain in the head and face:
Apricot Seed (3 liang, soaked in decoction, skin and pointed ends removed, using pairs).
Mix the above with egg yolk, pound until creamy, and apply externally. Wrap with cloth. Change when dry. Apply 7 to 8 times daily until healed.
