Sudden swelling and pain of the throat are caused by the fullness of the internal organs, resulting from sudden heat in the Spleen and Lung. In some cases, ingestion of cinnabar and stone minerals (Dan Shi) leaves toxic vapors lodged in the viscera, steaming upward to the Upper Jiao. Additionally, excessive consumption of roasted, fried foods and strong hot wine attacks the Spleen and Lung, causing stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, obstruction of the air passages, and failure of the pathogenic heat-toxin to diffuse and circulate freely. Consequently, this leads to sudden swelling and pain of the throat.
For sudden swelling and pain of the throat due to heat-toxin accumulating in the chest and diaphragm, Ma Lin Gen San (Irises Radix Powder) is indicated.
Irises Radix (Ma Lin Gen) (2 liang)
