Generally, consuming hot-natured foods will disturb Lung Qi (Lung Energy), causing heat to accumulate in the lungs. If this heat persists and is followed by drinking cold water, the cold and heat clash, causing Qi stagnation and failure to diffuse, resulting in a Cold pattern.
**Baizhu San Formula (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Powder)** for treating Upper Qi (rebellious Qi rising upward), chest fullness due to eating hot food and drinking cold water; fluid retention under the heart that does not dissipate; deficiency wheezing with oppression; and inability to eat.
* Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) - 1 liang
* Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) - 3 fen
* Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium aged) - 3 fen, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried
* Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) - 1 liang
* Helilepi (Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium) - 1 liang
Process: Pound and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 da zhen (large cup) of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until 0.5 da zhen remains. Strain and take warm. Take 3-4 times daily.
**Chenjupi San Formula (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Powder)** for treating Upper Qi, chest fullness, and inability to eat due to eating hot food and drinking cold water.
* Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium aged) - 3 fen, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried
* Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) - 0.5 liang
* Chifuling (Poria with Red Hosta Root) - 0.5 liang
* Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) - 3 fen, radix neck removed
* Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) - 3 fen
* Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) - 3 fen, honey-fried
* Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) - small amount
Process: Pound and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 da zhen of water, 3 dates (Jujubae Fructus), and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until 0.5 da zhen remains. Strain and take while slightly warm.
For treating "Zouma Benchuan" (rapid, horse-like panting/wheezing) caused by immediately drinking cold water after exertion, leading to Upper Qi and fever, this formula is suitable:
* Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) - 50 leaves
* Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium aged) - 1 liang, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried
Process: Add 1 da zhen of water to the above ingredients. Boil until 0.6 da zhen remains. Strain. Divide into two doses. Take them successively while warm.
Formula for treating Upper Qi and chest fullness due to excessive consumption of hot food and cold water:
* Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) - 3 fen, soaked in decoction seven times, dried, lightly fried
* Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) - 3 fen
* Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) - 3 fen
* Chifuling (Poria with Red Hosta Root) - 3 fen
* Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) - 0.5 liang
Process: Pound and grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey and pound/beaten 200-500 times. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, washed down with warm ginger water.
Formula for treating relentless rapid wheezing caused by overeating hot food and excessive cold water, where cold attacks the Lung organs:
* Badou (Crotonis Fructus) - 1 fen, skin and core removed, wrapped in paper and pressed to remove oil
* Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) - 1 liang, processed until cracked and chopped
* Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma from Sichuan) - 1 liang, chopped and lightly fried
Process: Pound and grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, washed down with warm water. Recovery is indicated by vomiting or diarrhea.
