Ophthalmoptosis (drooping of the eye/pupil) is caused by the invasion of "thieving wind" (pathogenic wind) into the eye. When cold and wind pathogens penetrate through the pupil and attack the ocular ligaments (eye bands), the pupil is pulled downward, a condition named Ophthalmoptosis.
For treating Ophthalmoptosis where wind-heat pulls the pupil downward, it is appropriate to take this Xixin San (Asarum Powder) formula.
Ingredients: Xixin (Asarum Herba, 1 liang), Chi Fuling (Red Poria, 1 liang), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 1 liang), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 1.5 liang, heart removed, roasted), Mutong (Akebia Stem, 1.5 liang), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Crush the above ingredients and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhen of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals. Take again before retiring to bed.
Dietary Restrictions: Avoid roasted or grilled foods.
For treating Ophthalmoptosis where wind-toxin pulls the pupil downward, causing tightness and urgency in the ocular ligaments and blurred vision, it is appropriate to take Juhua San (Chrysanthemum Powder) formula.
Ingredients: Gan Juhua (Sweet Chrysanthemum Flower, 1 liang), Xuanjufang (Inula Flower, 3 fen), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Fresh Dried Rehmannia Root, 0.5 liang), Lingyangjiao Xie (Antelope Horn Chips, 1 liang), Haitongpi (Phellodendron Bark, 0.5 liang), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, 1 liang), Juemingzi (Cassia Seed, 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Crush the above ingredients and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhen of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals. Take again before retiring to bed.
For treating blindness due to Ophthalmoptosis, where the eyes are pulled and sunken, accompanied by occasional spasms (convulsions/twitching) and scattered/chaotic vision, it is appropriate to take Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) formula.
Ingredients: Xijiao Xie (Rhinoceros Horn Chips, 0.5 liang), Lingyangjiao Xie (Antelope Horn Chips, 0.5 liang), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed, 1 liang), Gouqizi (Goji Berry, 1 liang), Huaizi (Sophora Seed), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Qingxiangzi (Celosia Seed).
Preparation and Administration: Crush the above ingredients finely and sieve them to make a powder. After each meal, take 2 qian of the powder mixed with decocted Huaizi (Sophora Seed) soup. Take again before retiring to bed.
For treating chronic Ophthalmoptosis that does not heal, it is appropriate to take Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder).
Ingredients: Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, 2 liang), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, radix removed), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, rhizome removed), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit, lightly stir-fried), Hu Huanglian (Picrorhiza Rhizome), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Crush the above ingredients finely and sieve them to make a powder. On an empty stomach, take 2 qian mixed with salted water. Before evening meal, take another dose mixed with hot decocted Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber) water.
For treating Ophthalmoptosis downward and gradual loss of vision caused by wind-pathogen attacking the eyes, it is appropriate to take Huaizi Wan (Sophora Seed Pill) formula.
Ingredients: Huaizi (Sophora Seed), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Difuzi (Kochia Fruit), Shashen (Adenophora Root, rhizome removed), Renshen (Ginseng Root, rhizome removed), Lingyangjiao Xie (Antelope Horn Chips, each 1.5 liang), Juemingzi (Cassia Seed, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Crush and sieve the above ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey and pound for 300-500 strikes to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. On an empty stomach daily, swallow 30 pills with warm grain water. Take again at night.
For treating Ophthalmoptosis caused by wind-heat attack, use this external eye-drop ointment formula.
Ingredients: Zhu Gan (Pig Liver, 1 piece), Heidouhua (Black Soybean Flower, dried), Huaihua (Sophora Flower, dried), Dihuanghua (Rehmannia Flower, dried, each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Except for the pig liver, crush the other ingredients finely and sieve them to make a powder. Mix with the pig liver and place in a pan. Add 2 dou of water and simmer over low heat. Wait until a solidified lipid layer forms on the surface, resembling butter slices.
