Various types of Dan (erysipelas-like conditions) in infants and children arise from wind-heat toxic pathogens invading the Couli (skin pores and interstitial spaces). The heat-toxin contends with blood and Qi, steaming outward. This causes the skin to become hot and red, resembling application of cinnabar, hence the name "Dan".
For treating various Dan conditions in children, if the toxicity is severe with significant redness and swelling, and the body has a high fever like fire, and previous medications have been ineffective, Lan Qing San (Blue Green Powder) is indicated.
