When infants and young children suffer from pox-like diseases (rashes and smallpox), it is all due to accumulated heat in the Zang-Fu organs. The steaming and郁 (stagnant) heat-toxin scatters to the four limbs. Because children's skin and flesh are tender and weak, they are prone to this disease.
For weaned infants and toddlers, if rashes or pox appear on the body, or before they erupt, these symptoms manifest. According to Bian Que's discussion, one can first administer an oil preparation to promote sweating and resolve the exterior. If physicians stand by idly, and folk customs mostly forbid administering medicine, leading to constipation and inability to regulate the Zang-Fu with decoctions, the failing heat will stagnate within, resulting in untreatable conditions.
When weaned children contract pox-like diseases, at the initial stage, it often resembles a cold syndrome. The face and four limbs are red, with high fever, headache, backache, rapid breathing, and sometimes purple discoloration of the lips or skin.
**Zicao Decoction:**
* *Radix Arnebiae* (Zicao, 2 liang): Finely chop the herb. Pour one large cup of boiling water over it. Cover immediately to prevent the aroma from escaping. Let it cool to a temperature suitable for human touch. Based on the child's age, administer half to one he (a traditional unit of volume) warm. After taking this medicine, even if the rash erupts, it will be mild.
**Huixi Wine for Promoting Eruption:**
To facilitate the quick eruption of pox in children:
* *Coriandri Fructus* (Huixi, 3 liang): Finely chop. Boil in two large cups of wine. Add Huixi, cover immediately to retain the vapor. Cool, strain, and gently spray from the neck downwards.
**Protective Face Paste:**
After the pox erupts, care must be taken to protect the face. Before spraying Huixi wine, apply this paste to the face:
* *Cortex Phellodendri* (Huangbai, 1 liang)
* *Phaseoli Semen Mungo* (Lvdou, 1.5 liang)
* *Radix Glycyrrhizae* (Gancao, 4 liang, raw)
Pulverize the herbs into a fine powder. Mix with raw sesame oil to form a thin paste. Apply thickly around the ears, eyes, and face three to five times daily. After applying this paste, Huixi wine may be sprayed. Early application prevents pox; late application reduces the severity.
**Treatment for Latent Heat-Toxin:**
For children with latent heat-toxin in the Zang-Fu, showing slight heat in the limbs, reduced appetite, dry/standing hair, or slight forehead heat:
Mix one cup of raw oil with one cup of warm water. Stir continuously with a stick until fully emulsified. Administer appropriate amounts to the child.
**Mimenghua Powder for Eye Involvement:**
For pox entering the eyes or "Wugu Qi" (a type of eye pathology):
* *Flos Buddlejae Officinalis* (Mimenghua, 3 liang)
* *Semen Celosiae* (Qingxiangzi, 1 liang)
* *Semen Cassiae* (Juemingzi, 1 liang)
* *Fructus Plantaginis* (Cheqianzi, 1 liang)
Pulverize each separately. For each dose, mix 1.5 qian of Mimenghua with 0.5 qian of each other herb. Cook with a slice of sheep liver and consume.
**Chifuling Powder for Post-Eruption Cough:**
For post-pox cough, hypochondriac pain, and poor appetite:
* *Poria Cocos* (Chifuling, 0.5 liang)
* *Radix Glycyrrhizae* (Gancao, 0.5 liang, honey-fried)
* *Semen Gossypii Herbacei* (Zhizi Ren, 1 fen)
* *Radix Isatidis* (Daqing, 0.5 liang)
* *Radix Bupleuri* (Chuan Shengma, 0.5 liang)
* *Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae* (Zhike, 0.5 liang, bran-fried)
Pulverize coarsely. Take 1 qian per dose with one cup of water, seven leaves of *Artemisia argyi* (Kuzhu Ye), and thirty grains of fermented soybean (Chi). Decoct to half volume, strain, and divide into three doses. Administer 3-4 times daily, adjusting dosage based on the child's size.
**Xijiao Powder for Pox and Red Sores:**
* *Cornu Rhinocerotis* (Xijiao, 1 fen)
* *Radix Gentianae* (Longdan, 0.5 fen, de-rooted)
* *Radix Scutellariae* (Huangqin, 0.5 liang)
* *Radix et Rhizoma Rhei* (Chuan Dahuang, 1 fen, stir-fried)
* *Cortex Morus Radicis* (Sangenbapi, 1 liang)
Pulverize coarsely. Take 1 qian per dose with one cup of water. Decoct to half volume, strain, and take warm in three doses. Adjust based on age. After sores recede, apply concentrated Xijiao water topically for better results.
**Dahuang Powder for Post-Eruption Clearance:**
For after the pox has fully erupted:
* *Radix et Rhizoma Rhei* (Chuan Dahuang, 0.5 liang, stir-fried)
* *Radix Scutellariae* (Huangqin, 0.5 liang)
* *Radix Scrophulariae* (Xuanshen, 0.5 liang)
Pulverize coarsely. Take 1 qian per dose with one cup of water. Decoct to half volume, strain, let cool, and administer in divided doses according to the child's size.
**Early Intervention Formula for Excess Heat:**
For early detection of pox caused by excess heat-toxin:
* *Radix et Rhizoma Rhei* (Chuan Dahuang, 1 liang, stir-fried)
Pulverize. Take 1 qian per dose with one cup of water. Decoct to 5-6 parts, strain, and divide into two warm doses. Take at any time.
**Alternative Formula:**
* *Rhizoma Coptidis* (Huanglian, 1 liang, remove roots)
Pulverize. Take 1 qian per dose with one cup of water. Decoct to half volume, strain. Take warm in divided doses according to age.
**Another Formula:**
* *Indigo Naturalis* (Boshi Qingdai): A quantity the size of a jujube pit, mixed with water and administered orally.
