Infants with fontanelles that fail to close are suffering from a deficiency and weakness of Qi and Blood, resulting in the bones failing to receive nourishment. This is primarily due to the Kidney Qi not yet being fully established, while Heat exists in the Liver and Lungs. The stagnant Heat Qi rises upward.
**Fangfeng San (Saposhnikovia Powder) for treating infants with open and unclosed fontanelles:**
* Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 1 liang, remove rhizome head)
* Baiji (Rhizoma Bletillae, 1 liang)
* Baiziren (Semen Platycladi, 1 liang)
Pulverize the above ingredients into a powder. Mix with milk and apply to the head. Continue application until the fontanelle closes.
**Hot Compress Prescription for treating infants with enlarged heads, open and unclosed fontanelles, small arms and shins, inability to support the head, and fontanelles remaining open at age three:**
* Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 1 liang, washed seven times with hot water to remove acridity)
* Xiongqiong (Radix Chuanxiong, 1 liang)
* Xixin (Herba Asari, 2 liang)
* Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang)
* Chuan Wutou (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii, 5 pieces, processed until cracked, peel removed)
Finely chop the above ingredients. Soak in 4 sheng of wine overnight. Wrap in cotton cloth and boil in a vessel until slightly warm. Apply as a warm compress to the infant's fontanelle area, morning and evening, for 20-30 times each session.
**Prescription for solidifying the fontanelle to prevent excessive cranial growth in infants:**
Take one red-combed rooster. Hold it near the infant's fontanelle, cut its comb, and allow blood to drip onto the fontanelle. Cover the blood with powdered Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) so the blood is concealed.
Infants with depressed fontanelles suffer from "fontanelle depression," where the fontanelle is sunken and uneven. This is caused by Heat steaming the Zang organs within the abdomen. When the Zang organs are heated, thirst arises leading to drinking; if urination is frequent, it further depletes the Fu organs.
**Sheng Gan Dihuang San (Raw Dried Rehmannia Powder) for treating infants with organ congestion and Heat, lack of Qi and Blood nourishment, resulting in depressed and uneven fontanelles:**
* Sheng Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 2 liang)
* Wuji Gu (Os Gallus, 1 liang, coated with butter and roasted until yellow)
Pulverize the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take half a qian, mixed with rice broth, at any time.
**Prescription for treating infant fontanelle depression:**
Extract bone marrow from pig mandibles, simmer into a paste, and apply to the fontanelle. This is effective.
**Another prescription:**
Roast dog skull bones until yellow, pulverize into powder, mix with egg white, and apply.
**Another prescription:**
Roast Tianlinggai (Human Calvaria) until yellow, pulverize into powder, mix with raw sesame oil, and apply.
