Umbilical sores in infants arise from improper cleaning after umbilical cord separation at birth, allowing dampness to remain in the umbilicus. When the swaddling clothes are loosened and exposed to wind, wind-dampness pathogens combine and contend, resulting in chronic umbilical ulcers that fail to heal.
Formula for treating umbilical sores in infants:
Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbo, 1 liang), Coal dust from the cauldron bottom (Fudimei, 2 fen), Ash of tangled hair (Luangfa hui, 1 fen).
Pulverize Phellodendri Cortex into powder first, mix with the other two ingredients, grind evenly, and apply to the umbilicus.
Formula for treating chronic umbilical sores in infants that do not heal:
Dried Toad (Gan Xama, 1 liang, calcined to ash), Alum (Baifan, 1 fen, calcined to ash).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder and apply to the umbilicus.
Another formula:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 0.5 liang, powdered), Lead white (Hufen, 0.5 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder and apply to the umbilicus.
Another formula:
Dry Portulaca Oleracea (Machixian) by sun exposure, pulverize, and apply.
Another formula:
Calcined Dragon Bone (Longgu), finely ground into powder and applied.

Fermented Soybean (Xiangchi), stir-fried until scorched, pounded and sifted into powder, and applied.
Another formula:
Dragon's House Earth (Fulonggan), finely ground and applied.
"Jie Lu" (Splitting of the Cranial Sutures) refers to a condition where an older infant’s cranial sutures fail to close as they should, resulting in separated head seams. This is caused by insufficiency of Kidney Qi. The Kidney governs bones and serves as the Sea of Marrow.
Formula for treating infants with wide fontanelles, persistent fever, head sweating, abdominal distension, cough with qi rebellion, shoulder breathing, stiff calves, contracted feet, and inability to walk by age three:
Semina Aurichalci (Zhongru Fen, 1 fen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 1 fen, radix removed), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang, 2 fen), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 1 fen, finely ground), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red).
Pulverize the above herbs and sieve into powder. Mix with the already ground medicines and grind uniformly. Combine with dog brain marrow to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take three pills per dose, washed down with rice gruel broth.
Formula for applying Baiji Powder to treat splitting cranial bones in infants:
Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji, 1 fen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 1 fen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 1 fen, radix removed), Biota Semen (Baiziren, 1 fen).
Pulverize and sieve the above ingredients into powder. Mix with milk and apply to the infant’s cranial sutures. Use twice daily.
