The meridians of infants and young children are prone to heat in the blood and qi, which frequently leads to epistaxis (nosebleed). Blood follows the movement of qi, circulating through the meridians and traversing the zang-fu organs. If the internal cold and heat are harmonious, the circulation will proceed according to its normal course.
To treat epistaxis in infants and young children, or hemoptysis (coughing up blood), use Shengma San (Cimicifugae Rhizoma Powder).
Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, half liang), Lingyangjiao Jie (Cornu Saigae Tataricae Scraps), Gancao Zhi (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, roasted until slightly red and chopped), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (each one fen above).
Crush the aforementioned herbs into a coarse powder. Administer one qian per dose. Add seven leaves of Dan Zhuye (Herba Lophatheri) to one small cup of water, decoct until five fen remains, strain the dregs, and add Dihuang Zhi (Jus Radicis Rehmanniae Recens).
To treat persistent epistaxis in infants and young children, use Shengdihuang Jian (Rehmanniae Radix Decoction).
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, half jin for juice), Ciji (Herba Cirsii Japonici, half jin for juice), Xingren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae, one liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel removed, bran-roasted until yellow, separately ground), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, half liang).
Place all the aforementioned herbs into a silver pot and simmer slowly over low heat until a paste is formed. Take at any time, mixing one qian with fresh cool water. Adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Another prescription:
Ciji (Herba Cirsii Japonici, half liang), Luangfa Hui (Ash of Human Hair, one fen), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae, half liang).
Grind the aforementioned herbs into a fine powder and sieve. Mix half a qian with cold water for each dose. Take at any time, adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat epistaxis accompanied by cardiac oppression in infants and young children, use Guixin San (Ramulus Cinnamomi Powder).
Guixin (Ramulus Cinnamomi, one fen), Luangfa Hui (Ash of Human Hair, one fen), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, half ban, processed until cracked and chopped).
Grind and sieve the aforementioned herbs into a powder. Take half a qian mixed with cold water at any time, adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat sudden epistaxis caused by heat-toxin attacking the brain in infants and young children, use Zhiren San (Semen Gossampini Powder).
Zhizi Ren (Semen Gossampini, one liang), Huaihua (Flos Sophorae, half liang, lightly stir-fried).
Grind the aforementioned herbs into a fine powder and sieve. Mix half a qian with warm water for each dose. Adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Another prescription for persistent epistaxis in infants and young children:
Luangfa Hui (Ash of Human Hair, half liang), Fulonggan (Terra Caulis Longan, one liang).
Grind the aforementioned herbs uniformly. Take half a qian mixed with fresh cool water at any time, adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Another prescription:
Ciji Zhi (Jus Herbae Cirsii Japonici, two he), Dihuang Zhi (Jus Radicis Rehmanniae Recens, one he), Shengjiang Zhi (Jus Rhizomatis Zingiberis Recens, a little).
Mix the juices evenly. Slowly consume half a he. Stuff the dregs into the nostrils; this will cure the condition.
Another prescription:
Stir-fry Sang'er (Auricularia Auricula-Judae) until scorched and cooked, grind into a fine powder and sieve. Take half a qian mixed with cold water at any time, or blow a small amount into the nostrils. Adjust according to the child's age and size.
Another prescription:
Burn human hair into ash, grind finely, and blow a small amount into the nostrils to achieve a cure.
