Malaria characterized by alternating chills and fever arises when cold qi (Cold Energy) merges with the Yin aspect, causing chills; and wind qi (Wind Energy) merges with the Yang aspect, causing fever. The two aspects of Yin and Qi undergo alternating excess and deficiency, thus resulting in the alternation of chills and fever.
For treating malaria with alternating chills and fever, where the complexion is greenish-yellow during attacks, use the Ginseng Powder for Inducing Vomiting Formula.
Ginseng Rhizome Head (Ren Shen Lu Tou, 0.5 liang), Heng Shan (Tripterygium hypoglaucum root, 0.5 liang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 0.5 liang, raw), Juncus Effusus Stem (Deng Xin, three large bundles), Aged Tangerine Peel (Chen Ju Pi, 1 fen, soaked in water, white pith removed, dried), Tea Powder (Cha Mo, 2 qian).
The above herbs are finely chopped. Boil all ingredients in two large cups of water until reduced to one large cup. Then add one medium cup of wine and boil for three or four boils. Strain the dregs. Take on an empty stomach, divided into three doses. After each dose, induce vomiting using a comb to stimulate the throat. Administer the next dose after vomiting subsides. Continue until phlegm-rheum (Tan-Yin) is completely expelled.
