When the seasonal pathogenic factor disease reaches the third day, the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel is affected. The Shaoyang channel circulates along the hypochondrium and ascends to the neck and ears. Therefore, after three days of illness, symptoms such as heat in the chest and hypochondrium and deafness occur. At this stage, the meridians of the Three Yang channels begin to transmit the pathogen, but it has not yet entered the Zang organs. Thus, the disease can be cured by inducing sweating.
For the seasonal pathogenic factor disease on the third day, presenting with headache, high fever, mental restlessness and oppression, and discomfort in the chest and diaphragm, Chai Hu San (Bupleurum Powder) is appropriate.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, removed roots), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, removed rhizomes), Xi Jiao (Horn Rhinocerotis, sliced), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Mai Men Dong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis, removed hearts) (each 1 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed), Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 0.5 liang, washed seven times with decoction to remove slipperiness).
Preparation and Administration: The above ingredients are pounded and sieved into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1 da zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 3 dates. Decoct until 0.5 portion remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For the seasonal pathogenic factor disease on the third day, presenting with headache and high fever, Ge Gen San (Pueraria Powder) is appropriate.
Ingredients: Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae, 1.5 liang, crushed), Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae, 1.5 liang, removed roots and nodes), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed), Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 1 liang, soaked in water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel bran-fried until slightly yellow).
Preparation and Administration: The above ingredients are pounded and sieved into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1 da zhan of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 3 dates. Decoct until 0.5 portion remains, strain, and take hot. Cover with clothing to induce sweating.
For the seasonal pathogenic factor disease on the third day where the exterior syndrome is unresolved and heat toxin transmits, possibly accompanied by vomiting or coughing, Jie Ji Ma Huang San (Muscle-Releasing Ephedra Powder) is used.
Ingredients: Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang, removed roots and nodes), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 0.5 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed), Xi Xin (Herba Asari, 0.5 liang), Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 3 fen, soaked in water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel bran-fried until slightly yellow).
Preparation and Administration: The above ingredients are pounded and sieved into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 150ml) of water. Decoct until 0.6 portion remains, strain, and take hot. Cover with clothing to induce sweating.
For the seasonal pathogenic factor disease on the third day where the pathogen has not resolved, presenting with pain in the four limbs and heat/oppression in the heart and diaphragm, Bie Jia San (Tartar Shell Powder) is used.
Ingredients: Bie Jia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, 1.5 liang, coated with vinegar and fried until slightly yellow, removed skirt-like edges), Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang, removed roots and nodes), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, fried with ginger juice until dry).
Preparation and Administration: The above ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water and 50 grains of Dou Chi (Faba Fermentata). Decoct until 0.5 portion remains, strain, and take hot. Follow with Cong Zhou (Scallion Porridge). Sweating indicates recovery; if no sweat occurs, administer again.
For the seasonal pathogenic factor disease on the third day, presenting with headache and vexatious heat, Da Huang San (Rhubarb Powder) is appropriate.
Ingredients: Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae, 1 liang, removed roots), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, 1 liang, removed roots), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed).
Preparation and Administration: The above ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water and 0.5 fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until 0.6 portion remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
Another prescription.
Burn Sao Jiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) to ash, grind and sieve into a powder. Take 2 qian per dose at any time, mixed with 1 zhong zhan of freshly drawn water, a little fresh ginger juice, and honey. First, bathe with warm water, then take this medicine. Sweating will occur shortly thereafter, leading to recovery.
