When the seasonal epidemic disease (Shi Qi, seasonal infectious diseases) reaches the fifth day, the Shaoyin meridian is affected. The Shaoyin meridian passes through the Kidney and connects with the Lung, and is linked to the root of the tongue. Therefore, on the fifth day of illness, symptoms such as heat in the mouth, dryness of the tongue, thirst, and a desire to drink water occur. At this stage, the pathogen is located in the intestines, so the disease can be cured by purgation.
For the treatment of Shi Qi on the fifth day, characterized by high fever and a洪数 (Hong-Shu, surging and rapid) pulse in all three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi), purgation may be employed. The Da Huang Yin Zi (Rhubarb Drink) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang 5 qian, cut into small pieces and lightly stir-fried), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae, 3 qian), Zhi Ke (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 0.5 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, pith removed), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang), Chuan Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang 5 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and cut).
All the above ingredients are finely cut and mixed evenly. Take 0.5 liang per dose, add one large cup of water, decoct until five parts remain, remove the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For the treatment of Shi Qi on the fifth day, where heat-toxin persists, causing mental restlessness and oppression, constipation in both large and small intestines, or occasional headache, the Chai Hu San (Bupleurum Powder) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, radix removed), Zhi Ke (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, pith removed), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Da Qing (Folium Isatidis), Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas Prismaticus), Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, cut and lightly stir-fried) (each 1 liang), Mai Men Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liang 5 qian, heart removed and baked), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, fried until slightly red and cut).
The above ingredients are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. For each dose, use one large cup of water, decoct until five parts remain, remove the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For the treatment of Shi Qi on the fifth day, characterized by chest and abdominal fullness and oppression, pain in bone joints, heat and irritability in the back and shoulders, and inability to eat, the Huang Qin San (Scutellaria Powder) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Xi Jiao Xie (Hornis Rhinocerotis, shaved), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, radix removed), Zhi Ke (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, pith removed and baked), Bing Lang (Areca Seed) (each 1 liang).
The above ingredients are finely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add one medium cup of water, decoct until five parts remain, remove the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For the treatment of Shi Qi on the fifth day, characterized by headache and severe fever, and vomiting after eating, the Zhu Ru Yin Zi (Bamboo Shavings Drink) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Zhu Ru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, rhizome removed), Lu Gen (Rhizoma Phragmitis), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae) (each 0.5 liang).
All the above ingredients are finely cut and mixed evenly. Take 0.5 liang per dose, add one large cup of water and 0.5 fen of Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct until five parts remain, remove the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For the treatment of Shi Qi on the fifth day, characterized by chest oppression and occasional delirium (Zhan Yu), caused by dry stool accumulation in the stomach and intestines, the Cheng Qi Tang (Order the Qi Decoction) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang, cut and lightly stir-fried), Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 0.5 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Chuan Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang), Nong Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 0.5 liang, coarse skin removed, brushed with fresh ginger juice and fried until fragrant and cooked).
The above ingredients are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add one medium cup of water, decoct until six parts remain, remove the dregs, and take warm at any time. Use until bowel movement is achieved.
For the treatment of Shi Qi that has not resolved by the fifth day, characterized by severe fever and mental irritability, the Xiao Du San (Detoxification Powder) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Da Qing (Folium Isatidis), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae, cut), Chuan Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 2 liang; note: original text contains variant "1" in brackets, here following main text as 2 liang or referencing collation).
The above ingredients are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add one large cup of water and 50 grains of Chi Xiao Dou (Semen Sojae Praeparatum), decoct until five parts remain, remove the dregs, add Ban He (half he) of Di Huang Zhi (Jujubae Fructus juice? Note: Di Huang Zhi usually refers to Rehmannia juice, but context implies adding liquid), boil for two or three boils, and take warm at any time.
