Formulas for Treating Epidemic Febrile Diseases Manifesting as Mania
Epidemic febrile diseases manifesting as mania are caused by the flourishing of heat-toxin qi. Patients may discard their clothes and run, climb to high places and sing, or go without food for several days, scaling walls and climbing onto roofs. These behaviors are not actions they would normally perform.
For epidemic febrile diseases where heat-toxin attacks the heart, causing redness of the face and eyes, mania, and loss of recognition, the Gardenia Powder Formula (Zhizi San) is suitable.
Ingredients: Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus), Weirui (Polygonati Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed), Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xijiao Xie (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved), Shashen (Adenophorae Radix, radix head removed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, sliced and slightly stir-fried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced).
