In cases of injury caused by bows and crossbows, if the arrowhead is poisoned and enters the skin and vessels, it causes shortness of breath and can lead to death within moments. Symptoms include lockjaw (trismus), dry lips, cessation of blood flow, abdominal distension, inability to speak, and a state resembling drunkenness while on the verge of death; such conditions are considered incurable.
However, if Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi) stagnation with blood stasis occurs and blood is expelled immediately, with the wound edges feeling warm and the patient able to open their mouth and speak, immediate ingestion or drinking of feces, applied topically to the wound, will result in recovery. Otherwise, rescue is impossible after a brief interval.
If an arrow strikes a broad area of the body, gradual treatment ensures survival. If it strikes near the chest or abdomen, urgent treatment is required; any delay allows toxins to penetrate internally, making rescue impossible.
