The Spleen and Stomach are exterior-interiorly related. The Spleen is responsible for transforming and transporting water and grain; if the Spleen is deficient and fails to digest food, while the Stomach, as the "Sea of Water and Grain," transforms its essence into Qi and Blood to nourish the Zang-Fu organs, and its dregs are transmitted to the Large Intestine. If the intestines and stomach are weak and affected by pathogenic factors, or if cold and raw foods damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to undigested food and deficiency-cold in the Large Intestine, water diarrhea (Shui Xie) results.
