Water syndrome is caused by obstruction and stagnation of the meridians, leading to the accumulation of water qi within the abdomen, resulting in dysfunction of the large and small intestines. The disease presents with hard masses in the abdomen located between the two hypochondria, abdominal distension and fullness, and edema throughout the body; hence it is termed Water Syndrome (Shui Zheng).
For Water Syndrome presenting with epigastric hardness and fullness, shortness of breath and rapid breathing, restlessness during sleep, and constipation with difficult defecation, use Biejia San (Turtle Shell Powder) Formula.
Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 1.5 liang, coated with vinegar and roasted until yellow, remove the skirt), Sang Gen Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, 2 liang, sliced), He Li Le Pi (Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium, 1.5 liang), Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Core, 1.5 liang), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, 1 liang, slightly roasted to remove moisture), Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, sliced and slightly roasted).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with one da zhen (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to 0.5 da zhen, strain, and take warm. Repeat the dose after walking for approximately four to five li.
For Water Syndrome presenting with hard abdominal distension, wheezing, and difficulty in urination and defecation, use Muxiang Wan (Costus Pill) Formula.
Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 3 fen), Gan Sui (Kansui Radix, 0.5 liang, used raw), Qing Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 0.5 liang, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried), Ni Fen (Calomel, 1 fen), Shui Yin (Hydrargyrum, 0.5 liang, mixed with a small amount of jujube flesh boiled, ground, wrapped in paper, and pressed to remove oil), Qu Mai (Fagopyri Dibotryis Herba, 1 liang, slightly roasted).
The above herbs are pulverized into fine powder, mixed with glutinous rice paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Take three pills on an empty stomach, administered with Mutong Tang (Tetrapanacis Medulla Decoction).
For Water Syndrome presenting with firm rigidity in the abdomen and hypochondria, generalized edema, and inability to eat, use Haizao Wan (Sargassum Pill) Formula.
Hai Zao (Sargassum, 1 liang, washed to remove saltiness), Jiao Mu (Zanthoxyli Semen, 1 liang, slightly roasted to remove moisture), Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang), Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen seu Descurainiae Semen, 1 liang, stir-fried between papers until purple), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 1 liang, skin and tip removed, double kernels avoided, bran-roasted until slightly yellow), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus Cortex, 1 liang), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 liang, processed, sliced).
The above herbs are pulverized into fine powder, mixed with refined honey and pounded three or two hundred times to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take three pills on an empty stomach and at bedtime, administered with warm water. Adjust dosage to achieve bowel movement.
For Water Syndrome presenting with massive abdominal swelling and hardness, and blockage of the large and small intestines, use Bai Fan Wan (Alumen Pill) Formula.
Bai Fan (Alumen, 0.5 liang, calcined until liquid runs out), Zhi Zhu Hua (Daphnes Genkwa Flower, 0.5 liang, mixed with wine and stir-fried until dry), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness), Li Lu (Veratri Radix, 0.5 liang, sliced and slightly roasted), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 0.5 liang, sliced), Chuan Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata, 0.5 liang, processed, skin and navel removed).
