For cases of excessive drinking in Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome), the etiology lies in deficiency of the Kidney with heat in the Heart, disharmony of the San Jiao (Triple Burner), resulting in heat above and cold below. This condition often arises from a diet rich in hot wine and roasted meats, or from the ingestion of drugs such as Ru Shi (Mineral Drugs) that cause stagnation. Heat toxins accumulate internally without being dispersed or unblocked; the interstices (Cou Li) become closed, and blood vessels fail to circulate properly. Heat steams within the Zang-Fu organs, depleting body fluids (Jin Ye). This leads to heat harassing the Heart, causing excessive and unrelenting drinking, mental restlessness, and unstable sleep.
