Furuncles (furuncle) are caused by the binding of wind-dampness and cold qi with blood, leading to aggregation. When a person engages in labor or exercise, yang qi is released outward, resulting in sweating. If cold dampness then attacks the meridians, the blood becomes congealed due to cold, causing stagnation and obstruction, which generates furuncles. The swelling forms a hard knot resembling a plum or a li fruit. Another view states that a swelling one cun to two fen in diameter is called a furuncle.
