On the fourth day of febrile disease, the Taiyin meridian is affected. The Taiyin meridian is the head of the three Yin meridians. After the pathogenic factors in the three Yang meridians have been exhausted, they transmit into the Yin meridians; thus, toxic factors invade the chest and diaphragm. The symptoms include dryness of the throat and fullness in the chest and diaphragm. In such cases, emesis (inducing vomiting) can be employed to achieve a cure.
For febrile disease on the fourth day presenting with Jie Xiong (chest binding characterized by fullness and pain due to the accumulation of heat and phlegm-fluid), fullness, severe pain, high fever, and body ache, it is appropriate to administer Kushen San (Bitterroot Powder) to induce emesis.
Ingredients: Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, 0.5 liang, sliced); Hengshan (Radix Dichroae, 0.5 liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients and sieve them to make a powder. Boil two medium bowls of water until reduced to one bowl. Strain the dregs. Drink the entire amount at any time. If emesis occurs, the patient will recover; if no emesis occurs, administer again.
