For carbuncles with internal deficiency, the etiology lies in a constitutionally weak body contracting cold pathogens. The cold lodges in the meridians and collaterals, causing blood vessels to become stagnant (原文“不涩”在此语境下指气血凝滞). Heat qi accumulates and knots together. Alternatively, if the heat toxin of the carbuncle does not dissipate, the heat qi forces inward upon the Heart, resulting in Heart Qi deficiency with heat, manifesting as palpitations and restlessness.
To treat carbuncles with internal deficiency, restlessness, continuous discharge of pus and water, weakness of the four limbs, inability to eat, chronic non-healing which inevitably progresses to internal fistula (internal leakage), Huang San Powder is indicated.
