After dysentery, the inability to eat is caused by the deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach and the rebellion of Qi in the chest. Wind-pathogen enters the intestines and stomach causing dysentery; during dysentery, water and grain (nutrients) are depleted. After the dysentery stops, the Spleen and Stomach remain deficient and cannot withstand food intake. Pathogenic factors contend with healthy Qi, causing Qi to rebel upward, leading to weak Stomach Qi and an inability to eat.
For cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency and exhaustion after dysentery, characterized by inability to eat and drink, and emaciation of the four limbs, Ren Shen San (Ginseng Powder) is indicated.
Ren Shen (Panax ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, remove rhizome head) Gao Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into pieces) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 1 liang) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 liang, remove rough bark, stir-fry with ginger juice until fragrant) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, stir-fry until slightly yellow)
Crush the above herbs finely and sieve them into a powder. Take 2 qian each time, at any time, mixed with jujube porridge decoction for administration.
For chronic cold-type dysentery where the Spleen and Stomach remain deficient after cessation, resulting in inability to eat and drink, and weakness in the four limbs, Bai Zhu San (Atractylodes Powder) is indicated.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into pieces and stir-fry lightly) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 liang, processed until cracked and cut into pieces) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 0.5 liang) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, stir-fry until slightly red and cut into pieces) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 liang, remove rough bark, stir-fry with ginger juice until fragrant) E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, 1 liang, crush and stir-fry until yellow and dry) Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 1 liang, stir-fry until slightly yellow) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang, cut into pieces and stir-fry lightly)
