Phlegm-cold Pi-yin (masses of fluid retention) refers to the stagnation and accumulation of water qi between the two hypochondria. When it encounters cold pathogenic factors and struggles with them, it aggregates into masses, which is called Pi-yin. The lesion is located under the hypochondria; the pulse is wiry and tense, and there is a sensation of tightness upon rising. Pressing on the abdomen produces a splashing sound of water.
To treat Phlegm-cold Pi-yin where stagnation accumulates and does not dissipate, located in the chest, accompanied by occasional dizziness and pain of the head and eyes, yellowing of the body and fingernails/toenails, distension and fullness extending to pain in the hypochondria, use the Mu Xiang San (Costus Powder) formula.
Mu Xiang (Bark of Aucklandiae Radix, half liang) Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, half liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Qing Ju Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, half liang, soaked in boiling water, white pith removed, dried) Gan Sui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui, one fen, sliced and baked until slightly yellow)
Yuan Hua (Flos Genkwa, three fen, mixed with vinegar and stir-fried until dry) Da Ji (Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis, half liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried)
The above herbs are pounded into a fine powder through a silk sieve. Each time, on an empty stomach, take one qian (approx. 3-5g) mixed with thick decoction of Jujube (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae), taken orally. Stop when bowel movement becomes loose.
To treat Phlegm-cold Pi-yin causing deficiency-type distension in the abdomen and diaphragm, frequent vomiting of sour fluid, occasional retching, and inability to eat, use the Hou Po San (Magnolia Bark Powder) formula.
Hou Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, three fen, coarse bark removed, coated with ginger juice and roasted until fragrant) Gao Liang Jiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum, half liang, sliced) Gui Xin (Lignum Cinnamomi Cassiae, half liang) Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, one liang, lightly stir-fried)
Bai Zhu (Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae, half liang, slightly reddish-brown, sliced)
Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae, half liang, washed seven times with hot water to remove acridity)
The above herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. Take five qian per dose. Add one large cup of water and half a piece of fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang). Decoct until only half a cup remains. Strain the dregs. Drink while slightly warm at any time.
To treat Phlegm-cold Pi-yin causing fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm with inability to eat, use the Bai Zhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) formula.
Bai Zhu (Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae, one liang) Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae, three fen, washed seven times with hot water to remove acridity) Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Host, two liang) Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, three fen, radix tip removed) Gui Xin (Lignum Cinnamomi Cassiae, three fen) Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, one fen, honey-roasted until slightly red and sliced) Fu Zi (Lateral Root of Aconitum Carmerichanum Preparatum, one liang, processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed) Qian Hu (Radix Peucedani, one liang, radix tip removed)
The above herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. Take five qian per dose. Add one large cup of water and half a piece of fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang). Decoct until only half a cup remains. Strain the dregs. Drink while warm at any time.

Xuan Fu Hua (Flos Inulae, half liang) Gui Xin (Lignum Cinnamomi Cassiae, three fen) Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii, half liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow, pith removed) Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, half liang, radix tip removed) Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens Preparatum, three fen, processed) Chuan Wu Tou (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparatum, three fen, processed until cracked)
Yuan Hua (Flos Genkwa, half liang, mixed with vinegar and stir-fried until slightly yellow) Hou Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, half liang, coarse bark removed, coated with ginger juice and roasted until fragrant)
