Tanpi (Phlegm Stagnation) is a condition caused by drinking water that fails to dissipate, remaining between the chest and diaphragm. When cold and heat qi interact and contend with each other, stagnation occurs, leading to the formation of phlegm. Furthermore, this fluid accumulation may shift and settle in the hypochondriac region, causing pain at times; this is termed Tanpi (Phlegm Stagnation).
To treat Tanpi (Phlegm Stagnation), accompanied by Qi stagnation in the heart and abdomen, attacking the hypochondriac region and causing pain, use Muxiang San (Costus Powder).
Muxiang (Bark of Aucklandia Root, Banliang) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, Liang, coated with vinegar and roasted until slightly yellow, remove skirt) Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, Liang, remove radicle) Chishao Yao (Radix Paevariae Rubra, Liang) Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 2-3 Fen, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, remove pith) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 3 Fen, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 Fen, roasted until slightly red and cut) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 3 Fen)
The above medicines are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of 4 qian. Add one zhong of water and half a fen of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to six parts, strain, and take warm at any time.
To treat Tanpi (Phlegm Stagnation) with fullness and hardness in the chest and below the umbilicus, vomiting and regurgitation, and loss of appetite, use Chifuling San (Red Poria Powder).
Chifuling (Poria with Red Host, Liang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Liang) Chenjupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Liang, soaked in water, white pith removed, dried) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Liang, cut and slightly stir-fried) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, Liang, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, Liang) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, Liang, processed until cracked, skin and navel removed)
The above medicines are coarsely ground and sifted to make a powder. Each dose consists of 5 qian. Add one large bowl of water and half a fen of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to five parts, strain, and take warm at any time.
For Tanpi (Phlegm Stagnation) where Qi does not disperse, resulting in loss of appetite, this formula is suitable.
Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 2 or 1 Liang) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, Liang, processed until cracked, skin and navel removed)
The above medicines are finely cut and divided into three doses. For each dose, add one large bowl of water, decoct until reduced to five parts, and strain.
