The eye is the manifestation of the Liver, serving as the sun and moon among the five Zang organs, and representing the clarity of the whole body. If the Zang-Fu organs are obstructed and stagnant, wind-heat combats each other, and toxic heat accumulates, causing red vessels to grow in the eye, rushing through and penetrating the cornea (Heijing), leading to dim vision. It is advisable to take Zhizi San (Gardenia Powder).
Zhi Zi Ren (Fructus Gardeniae, 1 liang), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, 1 liang, sliced), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 0.5 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly reddish and sliced), Lingyangjiao Xie (Hornis Saigae Tataricae, 1 liang), Juemingzi (Semen Cassiae, appropriate amount).
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals. Avoid roasted, fried, and hot/spicy foods.
For treating large red vessels growing in the eye, rushing through and penetrating the cornea, it is advisable to take this Ruiren San (Prunus Persica Kernel Powder).
Ruiren (Semen Pruni Persicae, 1 liang, soaked in hot water to remove the red skin), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried until slightly reddish and sliced), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, bran-fried until slightly yellowish and pith removed), Difuzi (Herba Kochiae, 0.5 liang each).
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
For treating red vessels rushing up and down through the cornea, accompanied by obstruction and stuffiness in the Zang-Fu organs, it is advisable to take Lingyangjiao San (Saiga Antelope Horn Powder).
Lingyangjiao Xie (Hornis Saigae Tataricae), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, de-stamened), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, sliced), Sangbaipipi (Cortex Morii Radicis, sliced, 1 liang each), Lugeng (Rhizoma Phragmitis, 2 liang), Xuanfuhua (Flos Inulae, 3 fen).
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water and fourteen leaves of Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
For treating red vessels undulating and penetrating the cornea, accompanied by toxic heat swelling and pain, and mental restlessness and confusion, it is advisable to take Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder). Note: Rhinoceros horn is banned; substitute with Shui Niu Jiao (Bubali Cornu) in modern practice.
Xijiao Xie (Cornu Rhinocerotis), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Weirui (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, de-rhizome head), Difuzi (Herba Kochiae), Lingyangjiao Xie (Hornis Saigae Tataricae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried until slightly reddish and sliced), Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas, appropriate amount).
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
For treating red vessels growing in the eye due to wind-heat, rushing through and penetrating the cornea, as well as the presence of Hua Yi (corneal opacity/pterygium-like lesion), it is advisable to apply Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder).
Zhenzhu (Margarita), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum or Naturalis), Hupo (Electrum), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Pengsha (Borax, size of two beans).
Grind the above herbs together finely into a powder. Apply a small amount three to five times daily using a chopstick made of copper.
For treating liver heat stagnation, red vessels growing in the eye, rushing through and penetrating the cornea, with continuous redness and pain, it is advisable to apply Huanglian Jian (Coptis Decoction/Eye Drop).
Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 fen, crushed, sifted into powder, and ground), Baifan Hui (Alumen Calcined, 1 fen), Nin Fen (Calomelas, 1 qian), Jingyan (Well Salt, 0.5 liang, ground), Pengsha (Borax, 1 qian, ground). Hu Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis? Or likely a typo for another herb, but listed here as present).
Place the above herbs in a porcelain bottle with one zhong of light fermented grain water and twenty ancient coins. Seal tightly and hang in a clean room for fourteen days (two seven-day periods). Filter through cotton cloth.
For treating wind-heat causing gritty sensation in the eye, red vessels growing, rushing to the pupil, with hot tears and pain, it is advisable to apply Ruiren Jian (Prunus Persica Eye Drop).
Ruiren (Semen Pruni Persicae, 1 liang, soaked in hot water to remove red skin and ground), Qingyan (Halitum Rubrum, 3 fen), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 liang, de-stamened, crushed and ground).
Decoct the above herbs in one zhong of vinegar-grain water until reduced to one small zhong. Remove dregs and place in a copper vessel. Separately obtain one gallbladder from a carp and one from a black-bone chicken. Mix their juices in a porcelain box. Apply a small amount to the eyes using a copper chopstick. Avoid wind.
