When the eyes hurt as if sand were in them, it is called "Grain Eye" (Su Yan). This is caused by the accumulation of toxic heat in the Heart and Lungs, with stagnant heat in the Lung organ and wind pathogen in the Liver home, leading to the formation of granular protrusions on the upper and lower eyelid skin and flesh. Frequent pricking to release blood can permanently eradicate the root cause.
For treating wind grains growing on the eyelids, as well as pearl tubes (similar to chalazion or hordeolum), use Fangfeng San (Saposhnikovia Powder).
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome) Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) Lingyangjiao (Caprae Cornu) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and lightly stir-fried, 2-3 liang each) Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, de-rhizome) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) Digupi (Lycii Cortex) (1-2 liang each) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried until slightly red, crushed, 0.5 liang)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.5 zhan, strain, and take warm after meals.
For treating wind grains in the eyes causing pain and frequent tearing, use Chongwei San (Leonuri Fructus Powder).
Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome) Lingyangjiao (Caprae Cornu) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled, removed germ, double-kernel wheat-bran fried until slightly yellow)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhan, strain, add Chuan Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 0.5 fen), mix well, and take... (text missing, likely after meals).
For treating drooping and swollen eyelids with wind grains rubbing against the eyeball causing pain, use this formula:
Honey (a little) Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum, half-date size, ground with saliva until no particles remain) Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, 0.5 qian, finely ground)
Mix and grind the above ingredients evenly. Apply a small amount to the eyes three to five times daily.
Swollen and hard eyelids are caused by stagnation in the Zang-Fu organs, with accumulated heat in the Liver and Lungs. The hot qi rushes upward to the eyes, compounded by external wind injury, causing wind-heat to linger and knot, then... (text missing).
For treating hard, red, swollen, and painful eyelids, use Huangqi San (Astragali Radix Powder).
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, crushed) Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, de-core, 1.5 liang each) Digupi (Lycii Cortex) Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 liang each) Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhan, strain, and take warm after meals. Avoid roasted and fried foods.
For treating eye wind-heat where toxic vapors attack upward, causing both eyelids to swell and harden like peaches or plums, making it impossible to open the eyes, take Lingyangjiao San (Caprae Cornu Powder).
Lingyangjiao (Caprae Cornu) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, de-rhizome) Chi Fuling (Poria cum Pini Radix) Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix - inferred from context)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhan, strain, and take warm after meals.
For treating swollen and hard eyelids, dull pain in the eyeballs, and blurred vision, use Xiage San (Diaphragm-Purging Powder).
Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, de-core) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Chuan Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang each) Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1.5 liang each)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhan, strain, and take warm after meals.
For treating swollen and hard eyelids with stabbing pain preventing opening, use Xixin San (Asari Radix Powder).
Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, de-rhizome) Chi Fuling (Poria cum Pini Radix) Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma) Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix - inferred)
Crush the above herbs into a powder. After meals, take 2 qian mixed with Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
