In healthy individuals who present with shortness of breath and insufficient respiration without signs of exterior cold or heat, this condition is generally due to a robust constitution. A robust constitution leads to excessive Qi; when Qi is excessive, it becomes rebellious and obstructed, resulting in shortness of breath.
Additionally, for cases of Lung Qi deficiency:
For treating excess syndrome of the Lung manifesting as shortness of breath in the chest, stagnation in the Upper Jiao (upper burner), and loss of appetite, the Wuweizi San (Schisandra Powder) formula is indicated.
Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 1 liang) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, 0.5 liang) Helilepi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 1 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed) Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, 1 liang, radix removed)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of 5 qian, decocted with 1 large zhen of water, adding 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and 3 dates. Decoct until 0.5 zhen remains, strain, and take warm.
For treating Qi deficiency manifesting as alternating cold and heat in the chest and diaphragm, and insufficient respiration, the Zisu San (Perilla Leaf Powder) formula is indicated.
Zisu Jingye (Herba Perillae Frutescentis, 2 liang) Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 1 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, 3 qian, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed) Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, 1 liang, radix removed) Chenjupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 qian)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, decocted with 1 medium zhen of water, adding 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and 3 dates. Decoct until 0.6 zhen remains, strain, and take warm.
For treating excess syndrome of the Lung manifesting as vexatious heat in the Upper Jiao, shortness of breath, chest fullness, and difficult breathing, the Mutong Wan (Akebia Pill) formula is indicated.
Mutong (Caulis Akebiae Trifolatae, 1 liang, crushed) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and pointed end removed, double-kernel removed, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow) Zisu Jingye (Herba Perillae Frutescentis, 1 liang) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1 liang)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of 5 qian, decocted with 1 medium zhen of water until 0.6 zhen remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For treating Lung heat manifesting as difficult breathing, the Maidong Fang (Ophiopogon Formula) is indicated.
Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1.5 liang, heart removed) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae, 3 qian, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness) Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 1.5 liang, radix removed) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, 3 qian, honey-fried until slightly red)

For treating deficiency-cold of the Lung manifesting as epigastric stuffiness, shortness of breath, and poor appetite, the Baizhu Wan (Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill) formula is indicated.
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 2 liang) Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang, radix removed) Chenjupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 3 qian, radix removed) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 0.5 liang, processed until cracked and crushed)
The above herbs are pounded, ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey, and pounded three to five hundred times until pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds are formed. Take twenty pills with Ginger and Date Decoction at any time.
