Lung abscess (Fei Yong) is a condition formed by the accumulation of Qi in the lung due to injury by cold pathogens. The Lung governs Qi, and its manifestation is observed in the skin and hair. If labor and fatigue damage the Blood and Qi, the Cou Li (pores and interstices) become open, allowing wind pathogens to invade. If dry mouth occurs, and the pulse is slightly tight and rapid, it indicates that pus has not yet formed. If the pulse is very tight but only rapid, it indicates that pus has already formed. Furthermore, lung disease should present with coughing, shortness of breath, and expectoration of pus and blood; the pulse should be short and choppy. If the pulse is instead floating and large, it is a death sign. If the complexion should be white but appears red instead, this represents Fire overcoming Metal, which is a counterproductive pattern and is difficult to treat.
For treating lung abscess with symptoms of Qi stagnation in the chest and heart, coughing with pus and blood, irritability and oppression in the shoulders and back, dark yellow urine, and frequent constipation, Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder) is suitable.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 1 liang, sliced), Bijieli (Fructus Tribuli, 3 fen), Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 fen, stir-baked with bran until slightly yellow, pith removed), Zisu Jingye (Herba Perillae, 1 liang), Xingren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae, 3 fen, soaked in water and lightly stir-fried).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct until 0.6 zhong remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating lung abscess with symptoms of wheezing, urgent coughing with pus and blood, mental restlessness, dry throat, and excessive thirst, Hanfangji San (Stephania Powder) is used.
Hanfangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae, 3 fen), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 3 fen, heart and peel removed), Sangbaipipi (Cortex Morii Radicis, 1 liang, sliced), Chifuling (Poria Cocos with Red Wood, 1 liang), Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 fen, stir-baked with bran until slightly yellow, pith removed), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 3 fen, sliced).
For treating lung abscess with irritability and coughing with pus and blood, Zhuru San (Bamboo Shavings Powder) is used.
Kuzhuru (Nodus Bambusae in Taeniam, 1 liang), Shenggan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 1 liang), Qigen (Radix Rubiae Cordifoliae, 0.5 liang), Baihe (Bulbus Lilii, 0.5 liang), Xingren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae, 0.5 liang, soaked in water, peel and tips removed, double kernels removed, stir-baked with bran until slightly yellow), Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 1.5 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-roasted until slightly red, sliced).
The above herbs are coarsely ground and sifted into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 da zhong of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct until 0.5 zhong remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating lung abscess with expectoration of pus and blood:
Yiyiren (Semen Coicis, 3 he).
Crush the herb. Add 2 da zhongs of water, boil down to 1 da zhong. Strain and divide into two warm doses. Recovery occurs when pus and blood are discharged.
Another prescription:
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 3 fen, radix and lumen removed), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang, sliced, raw).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water, decoct until 0.6 zhong remains. Strain and take warm. Re-administer after walking for approximately eight or nine li.
After vomiting in lung abscess, Bufei Painong San (Lung-Nourishing Pus-Discharging Powder) is suitable.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 2 liang, sliced).
The above herb is crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water, decoct until 0.6 zhong remains. Strain and take warm. Take three to four times daily.
For treating lung abscess with wheezing, coughing, urgency of Qi, and inability to sleep:

The above herb is crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 2–3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water, decoct until 0.6 zhong remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating lung abscess with broken and hoarse coughing sounds, slight body heat, irritability and fullness, and rough, scaly skin on the anterior chest (indicating Lung swelling):
Yeha Baipi (Cortex Albiziae Julibrissinis, 1 liang).
Slice the herb. Add 1 da zhong of water, decoct until 0.7 zhong remains. Strain and divide into two warm doses. Take at any time.
Another prescription:
Qingwei (Caulis Phragmitis Communis, 2 stems, sliced), Yiyiren (Semen Coicis, 2 he), Tianguazi (Semen Benincasae, 2 he), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 50 seeds, soaked in water, peel and tips removed).
Crush the herbs. First, add 3 da zhongs of water and decoct the reed stems until 1 da zhong remains. Strain. Add the Yiyiren, Tianguazi, and Taoren. Decoct together until 0.7 zhong remains. Divide into two warm doses. Take at any time.
For treating lung abscess with chest fullness, chills, rapid pulse, dry throat without thirst, occasional expectoration of turbid saliva with a foul odor, and long-term expectoration of pus resembling congee:
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 3 fen, radix and lumen removed), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, 0.5 liang), Badou (Semen Crotonis, 1 fen, peel and heart removed, wrapped in paper and pressed to remove oil).
The above herbs are finely ground into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Strong individuals take 5 pills with gruel drink; weak individuals take 3 pills. If the pathogen is above the diaphragm, it will be expelled via vomiting; if below the diaphragm, it will be expelled via diarrhea. If diarrhea is excessive and uncontrolled, eating 3 spoons of cold rice will stop it.
