Proctoptosis refers to the prolapse of the anus. It is mostly caused by chronic dysentery leading to deficiency-cold of the Large Intestine (Da Chang). The anus serves as an external indicator of the Large Intestine. When the Large Intestine is deficient and injured by cold, straining during dysentery causes qi to rush downward, resulting in prolapse; hence it is called proctoptosis.
Formula for treating prolapse due to deficiency-cold of the Large Intestine: Zhu Gan San (Pig Liver Powder).
Ingredients: Pig Liver (one slice, thinly sliced and dried), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 2 liang, remove roots), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 1 liang, crushed and fried until yellow and dry), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 1 liang), Prunus mume (Wumei) flesh (2.5 liang, slightly fried), Artemisia argyi Folium (Aiye, 1 liang, slightly fried).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder through a sieve. Take 2 qian before meals, mixed with rice broth.
Formula for treating intermittent prolapse after defecation due to deficiency-cold of the Large Intestine:
Ingredients: Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum (Bie Tou, one piece, coated with vinegar and roasted until slightly yellow/burnt), Ferri Oxidum Rubrum (Tie Jing, 1 liang, finely ground), Datura Semen (Langdang Zi, 1 liang, washed with water to remove floating seeds, soaked in water to sprout).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder through a sieve. Take 2 qian before meals, mixed with rice broth. Additionally, apply heat to the anus using an old hemp shoe sole.
Formula for treating proctoptosis accompanied by unbearable lower back pain due to wind-cold of the Large Intestine:
Ingredients: Calcined Stone (Duan Shi, 1 liang), Alum (Bai Fan, 1 liang), Lead Monoxide (Huang Dan, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients together, mix with oil to form cakes, and fire on a new tile until red-hot. Cool, grind finely, mix again, and fire. Repeat this process three times. Finally, grind into powder, add 1 fen of Moschus (Shexiang) powder, and mix evenly. Take 1 qian before meals, mixed with Aiye (Artemisia argyi) rice broth.
Formula for treating proctoptosis due to deficiency-cold of the Large Intestine:
Ingredients: Dry Helix Pomatia (Gan Wo Niu Zi, 100 pieces, slightly fried and ground into powder), Magnetitum (Ci Shi, 2 liang, crushed and washed to remove red juice).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct 5 qian of Magnetitum in one large cup of water until reduced to half volume. Strain and mix with 1 qian of snail powder. Take three times daily.
Another prescription:
Apply Iron Powder (Tie Fen) to the anus and press it back in. Apply each time it prolapses until cured.
Formula for treating proctoptasis that cannot be retracted due to long-standing deficiency-cold accumulation in the Large Intestine:
Preparation and Administration: Heat Calcined Stone (Duan Shi), wrap it in an old cloth, and sit on it. Replace when cool.
Another prescription:
Ingredients: Helix Pomatia (Wo Niu Zi, 1 liang, burnt to ash).
Preparation and Administration: Mix with Porcine Fat (Zhu Zhi) and apply topically. Retraction occurs immediately.
Another prescription:
Ingredients: Earth from the East Wall of a House (Wu Dong Bi Tu, 1 he, finely ground).

Another prescription:
Ingredients: Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum (Bie Tou, one piece, burnt to ash).
Preparation and Administration: Grind finely into powder and apply to the protruding anus.
Formula for treating continuous bleeding and painful proctoptosis due to wind-cold of the Large Intestine:
Ingredients: Wild Cat (Ye Li, one head).
Preparation and Administration: Place the wild cat in a large porcelain jar that fits it. Seal tightly with thick mud. Once dry, fire with strong heat until smoke ceases. Allow to cool, remove, add 0.5 liang of Moschus (Shexiang) powder, grind evenly, and store in a porcelain vessel. Take 2 qian before meals, mixed with warm rice broth.
Formula for treating proctoptosis protruding outside: Bie Tou San (Softshell Turtle Head Powder).
Ingredients: Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum (Bie Tou, one piece, roasted until yellow-burnt), Magnetitum (Ci Shi, 2 liang, fired seven times in vinegar, finely ground and wet-processed), Skin (Pi, one piece, roasted until yellow-dry/burnt), Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Xin, 1 liang).
