Dampness disease arises from the deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, allowing water-dampness pathogenic factors to invade. It manifests as movement of worms within the abdomen, eroding tissues and forming sores. It is often caused by persistent dysentery or epidemic diseases. If the condition changes to include vomiting and hiccups, it indicates that worms have eroded the Zang-Fu organs leading to deterioration, with bloody stool excretion; such cases are fatal. The etiology lies in the slight deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach and the weakness of Earth Qi, which is eroded by water-dampness, causing worm activity and sore formation, hence named "Dampness" (Shi).
Another type is referred to as "Epidemic Dampness" (Tian Xing Zhi Shi). Initially, there are no obvious symptoms, and daily activities remain normal, but there is a constant lack of energy, mild dysentery, or no dysentery at all. As the disease progresses, it transforms into vomiting, indicating internal erosion of the Zang organs by worms. Another type is called "Acute Knotting Dampness" (Ji Jie Shi), starting with abdominal pain and dysentery mixed with pus and blood. This leads to obstruction of urination and defecation, pain in the head and neck, and urgency/fullness in the lower abdomen, while sitting and rising remain relatively comfortable. There may also be internal erosion of the Five Zang organs. In such cases, although external signs are absent initially, the heart and abdomen feel constantly vexed and restless. Upon nearing death, sores appear on the lips, mouth corners, and anus, followed by death.
For treating worm-eroded anal redness, ulceration, bleeding, and pain, known as "Dampness," the Rabbit Head Powder (Tutou San) formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Rabbit Head (1 fen, calcined to ash), Fox Bone (1 fen, calcined to ash), Sweet Descurainia Seed (Tian Ting Li, 1 fen, stir-fried until fragrant), Snake Head (1 piece, lightly roasted), Toad (1 fen, calcined to ash), Ever-soot (Baicao Shuang, 1 fen), Dung Beetle (Qianglang, 1 piece, lightly roasted), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 1 fen, finely ground), Silkworm Moth (Wan Can E, 1 fen, lightly stir-fried), Green Alum (Qing Fan, 1 fen), Yellow Alum (Huang Fan, 1 fen), [Text unclear/corrupted, likely an herb] calcined to ash (5 cun), Sophora Root (Kushen, 0.5 fen, sliced), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai, 0.5 fen), [Text missing], Mirabilite (Mangxiao, 1 fen), Iron Rust (Tieyi, 1 fen), Cinnabar Powder (Zhu Mo, ...), Heart [Text missing], Scorpion Feces (Wo Xie Chong Fen, 0.5 fen), Bed Frame Wood/Zheng Wood (Chuang Zhong Guang Mu, ...).
The above herbs are finely pounded and sifted through a fine sieve. Mix with the already ground ingredients evenly. Take 1 qian per dose, wrap in cotton, and insert into the lower orifice. Use twice daily for good effect.
For treating Gan dampness sores with passage of dark red/black blood, anal worm erosion, redness, ulceration, and day-and-night pain, use the Realgar Fumigation Powder (Xunhuang San) formula.
Ingredients: Realgar (Xunhuang, 1 fen), Cinnabar (Zhusha, 1 fen, finely ground), Table Salt (Yanshi, 1 fen), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 1 fen, finely ground), Clove (Dingxiang, 1 fen), White Alum (Bai Fan, 1 fen, calcined to ash), Iron Rust (Tieyi, 1 fen), Ginger (Pao Lie Cuo), Sweet Descurainia Seed (Tian Ting Li), Acorus (Changpu) [each 1 qian], Human Skull Bone (Dulou Gu, 1 fen, roasted/boiled until yellow).
The above herbs are finely pounded and sifted. Take 1 qian per dose, wrap in cotton, and insert into the lower orifice. Change twice daily. Apply directly to any sores.
For washing and fomenting lower body Gan dampness sores, use the Clove Powder (Dingxiang San) formula.
Ingredients: Clove Powder (Dingxiang Mo, 1 fen), Musk (Shexiang, 1 qian, ground), Rhinoceros Horn Chips (Xijiao Xie, 3 fen), Licorice Root (Gancao, 3 fen, powdered).
Grind the above herbs together. Boil with 3 he of salt, 3 he of Sichuan Pepper (Jiaozhong), 2 he of Fermented Soybean (Chidou), and 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng. Strain. While slightly warm, dip cotton in the decoction to wash and foment the lower body. Reheat when cool.
For treating Gan dampness sores eroding the teeth/mouth and lower body:
Ingredient: Thistle Stem (Feilian, 3 liang).
Calcine to ash and grind finely. Apply 1 qian to the affected area. Endure severe pain if necessary; if painless, it is not Gan disease.
Another formula:
Ingredients: Sophora Root (Kushen, sliced), Celosia Seed (Qingxiangzi), Licorice Root (Gancao) [each 2 liang, raw, sliced].
Pound and sift finely. Before meals, take 1 qian mixed with warm fresh Rehmannia Juice (Sheng Dihuang Zhi).
For treating Gan dampness sores and killing worms, use the Celosia Seed Powder (Qingxiangzi San) formula.
Ingredients: Celosia Seed (Qingxiangzi), Realgar (Xionghuang, finely ground), Sulfur (Liu Huang, finely ground), Chinese Walnut Twig (Wuyi), Omphalia Fungus (Leiwu) [each 0.5 liang], Sophora Root (Kushen, 3 fen, sliced), Wild Wolf's Tooth (Yelangya, 3 fen).
Pound and sift into powder. Wrap 1 qian in cotton and insert into the lower orifice. Change twice daily.
Another formula:
Ingredients: Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 1 liang, finely ground), Clove (Dingxiang, 0.5 liang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 1 liang, remove stamens).
Pound and sift into powder. Mix with rice wash sediment to form pills the size of a jujube seed. Wrap in cotton and insert into the lower orifice. Change twice daily.
For lower body Gan sores persisting for years without healing, use this formula:
Ingredients: Clove (Dingxiang, 0.5 liang), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 0.5 liang, finely ground), Costus Root (Muxiang, 0.5 liang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 0.5 liang, remove stamens), Calcined Lime (Duanshi, 0.5 liang), Musk (Shexiang, ...).
Pound and sift finely. Apply 0.5 qian to the sore. Change 2-3 times daily.
Another formula:
Ingredients: White Alum (Bai Fan, 0.5 liang), Cinnamon Heart (Guixin, 0.5 liang), Cynanchum Paniculatum (Xuchangqing, 0.5 liang).
Pound and sift finely. Apply 0.5 qian to the sore 2-3 times daily.
Another formula:
Centipede (Wugong) calcined to ash, mixed with lard from the twelfth lunar month, applied topically. Highly effective.
Another formula:
Litsea Cubeba (Lanxiang) dried and powdered, applied to sores. Divine efficacy.
