The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian manifests its luster in the beard. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian manifests its luster in the hair. The Chong and Ren Mai (Penetrating and Conception Vessels) are regarded as the Sea of the Twelve Meridians.
For conditions characterized by deficiency and exhaustion of Blood and Qi, resulting in baldness of the beard and sparse or absent hair growth; even if hair grows, it may be yellowish rather than black. It is appropriate to take the Nan Zhu Cao Jian Wan Formula.
Nanzhu Grass (Vaccinium bracteatum), 5 jin; Acid Pomegranate Leaf (Punica granatum leaf), 5 jin; Hanlianzi Seedling (Ecliptae Herba), 5 jin.
Take the above three ingredients, collect them on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Day), place them in a porcelain bottle, seal tightly with mud, expose to sunlight, and retrieve in mid-June. The material will become viscous like dark maltose syrup.
Digut皮的 (Cortex Lycii), 4 liang; Shu Gan Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), 4 liang; Helile Pi (Pericarpium Terminaliae chebulae), 2 liang; Qin Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), 2 liang (remove the seeds and closed fruits, stir-fry lightly until "sweat" appears).
Pulverize the above medicines and sieve into fine powder. Mix with the aforementioned paste. Simmer over low heat. When ready to form pills, shape them into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds (Wutongzi). Take three pills orally with warm wine on an empty stomach daily.
Formula for Tonifying and Benefiting with Achyranthes Bidentata Pill for Beard Baldness and Sparse Hair Growth.
Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), 1 jin (remove seedlings); Sheng Gan Di Huang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix), 1 jin; Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), 0.5 jin (remove pith); Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), 0.5 jin; Digupi (Cortex Lycii), 0.5 jin.
Pulverize the above medicines together while fresh, sieve into fine powder. Blend with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take thirty pills orally with ginger decoction on an empty stomach daily, gradually increasing the dose.
Manningzi Gao Formula for Treating Head Wind due to Blood Deficiency, Resulting in Beard Baldness and Sparse Hair Growth.
Manningzi (Vitalis Fructus), 3 liang; Sangjisheng (Taxilli Caulis), 3 liang (text notes: or 5 liang); Sanggen Baipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), 2 liang; Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), 2 liang; Jiugen (Allii Tuberosi Radix), 2 liang; Lujiaoxie (Cornu Cervi Deglutitum), appropriate amount; Wuma You (Sesami Oleum Nigrum), 3 jin.
Finely chop the above medicines, wrap in cotton cloth, and immerse in fat and juice from Ziziphus jujuba root bark. Soak overnight. Simmer over slow fire, stirring frequently. When Baizhi turns scorched yellow, the ointment is ready.
Formula for Treating Beard Baldness and Sparse Hair.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata - note: text says raw use), 2 liang (remove skin and navel, use raw); Jingshi (Evodiae Fructus), 2 liang; Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen), 3 liang; Wuji Fen (Gallus gallus domesticus feces), 3 he; Songye (Pinus needle), 3 liang.
Mix the above medicines, store in a new porcelain bottle, dry in shade. After one hundred days, take out, pulverize and sieve into fine powder. Mix with horse fat to form a paste. Apply topically. After ten days...
Formula for Treating Beard Baldness and Sparse Hair, Accompanied by Dizziness and Wind Affecting the Head and Face. Use Ru Gao Formula.

Lianzicao Juice (Commelinae Herba), 1 jin; Xiong Baizhi (Ursi Adeps Album), 1 he; Zhugao (Suis Adeps), 1 he; Sheng Ma You (Sesami Oleum Viride), 1 he; Baishupi (Cortex Platycladi), cut 3 he; Jiugen (Allii Tuberosi Radix), quantity missing.
Mix the above medicines and simmer in a copper vessel through three cycles of boiling and cooling. Once the ointment is formed, filter out the dregs and store in a porcelain box. Apply nightly. The beard and hair will grow.
Formula for Treating Beard Baldness and Sparse Hair, Promoting Long and Square Growth.
Manningzi (Vitalis Fructus), 2 liang; Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, remove skin and navel, use raw), 2 liang.
Pulverize finely and sieve into powder. Mix with 5 sheng of wine. Seal tightly in a porcelain vessel. After twenty days, the medicine is ready. To use, first apply chicken fat, then use the medicinal liquid to comb the beard and hair. Good results after ten days.
Another Formula.
Shengjiang Zhi (Zingiberis Recensis Juice), 1 he; Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Rehmanniae Recensis Juice), 1 he; Yangzi Gan Zhi (Ovis/Caprae Hepatis Juice), 1 he.
Mix the above medicines evenly. Apply before going to bed at night. Hair will grow within ten days.
