Bi syndrome is formed by the combined action of wind, cold, and dampness pathogens. Its manifestations include muscle numbness and insensitivity, or pain. This occurs due to the deficiency of the body's healthy qi, leading to open cou li (skin texture and pores) and invasion by external pathogens.
Jin Bi (Sinew Bi): If Bi pathogen is contracted in summer, it develops into Ji Bi (Muscle Bi). If Ji Bi persists and is re-exposed to pathogens, the disease transmits to the Spleen. Symptoms include flaccidity and weakness of the four limbs, coughing, and vomiting. If Bi pathogen is contracted in autumn, it develops into Pi Bi (Skin Bi). The symptom of Pi Bi is loss of sensation in the skin. If Pi Bi persists, the disease transmits to the Lung. Symptoms include rapid breathing, panting, and chest pain. If Bi pathogen is contracted in winter, it develops into Gu Bi (Bone Bi). Symptoms of Gu Bi include heavy bones that are difficult to lift, immobility, and pain. If Gu Bi persists and is re-exposed to pathogens, the disease transmits to the Kidney. Symptoms include abdominal distension. Pulse diagnosis: a large and choppy pulse indicates Bi; a rapid/tight pulse indicates Bi; a choppy and tight pulse also indicates Bi.
