Lumbocrural damp-bi syndrome is caused by the mutual attack of wind, dampness, and cold pathogens. If healthy qi is strong, it circulates freely without stagnation; however, if wind-damp-cold pathogens prevail, they remain lodged within the body.
For wind-induced lumbocrural pain and cold-bi syndrome resulting in inability to walk or carry loads, the Bi Xie San (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Powder) formula is suitable.
Bi Xie (Radix Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae, 2 liang, crushed) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 1 liang, removed radicle) Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, 1 liang) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 liang, processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 3 fen) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang, crushed and slightly stir-fried) Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae, 1 liang, rough bark removed, crushed and slightly stir-fried).
The above herbs are coarsely ground into a powder. Each dose consists of 4 qian, decocted with half a cup of water and half a cup of wine until reduced to 60% volume. Strain and take warm before meals. Avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods.
For deficiency-wind of the lower jiao causing lumbocrural pain, cold-bi, and inability to walk or carry loads, the Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder) formula is suitable.
