Food dysphagia refers to the symptom of obstruction during swallowing. This condition arises from coldness and dysfunction of the Zang-Fu organs, leading to scanty and viscous body fluids that fail to transport and transform food and drink. Consequently, upon ingestion, food feels blocked and cannot pass through, hence it is termed "food dysphagia" (Shi Ye).
For treating a tendency toward dysphagia caused by eating and drinking, the Banxia San (Pinellia Powder) formula is suitable.
Herbs: Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang, washed seven times with hot water to remove slipperiness), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum, 0.5 liang, processed until cracked and chopped), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, radix removed), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix, 1 liang).
The above herbs are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, decocted with one zhong zhan of water, adding 0.5 ban of fresh ginger, two dates, and 50 grains each of wheat and small beans.
For treating food dysphagia where food and drink cannot go down, accompanied by extreme chest stuffiness and discomfort, the Lingyang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Powder) formula is suitable.
Herbs: Ling Yang Jiao Xie (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 1 liang), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 1 liang, radix removed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang, albedo removed).
