Hongjiao (a disease characterized by swelling and numbness of the lower limbs, often translated as beriberi or gout) presenting with swelling and fullness is caused by wind-dampness toxic qi clashing with the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney governs water metabolism. Now, being attacked by pathogenic factors, the meridians become obstructed and stagnant, failing to circulate and unblock fluid metabolism.
For treating Hongjiao with swelling and fullness, difficult urination, panting and urgency, and inability to eat, it is suitable to take Hanfangji San Decoction.
Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 0.5 liang), Chifuling (Polyporus, 3 fen), Binglang (Arecae Semen, 1 liang), Sanggenbaipi (Mori Cortex, 3 fen, sliced), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 3 fen, sliced), Zhuling (Polyporus, 3 fen).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose is 4 qian. Take one zhong zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, add 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger), and two bundles of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white, approx. 14 cun long). Decoct until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treating Hongjiao with puffy swelling of the head and face, and distending oppression in the abdomen and hypochondrium, it is suitable to take this Binglang San Decoction.
Binglang (Arecae Semen, 1 liang), Sanggenbaipi (Mori Cortex, 1 liang, sliced), Zisujingye (Perillae Folium, perilla stem and leaf, 1 liang), Helilepi (Chebulae Pericarpium, bark of Terminalia chebula, 1 liang), Luobozijie (Brassicae Semenicum, radish seed, 1 liang, slightly stir-fried).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved to make a powder. Each dose is 4 qian. Take one zhong zhan of water, add 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger), and two bundles of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white). Decoct until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Strain the dregs.
For treating Hongjiao Fengdu (wind-toxin), with puffy swelling of the head, face, feet, and knees, and stagnation/oppression in the heart and abdomen, it is suitable to take Dafupi San Decoction.
Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium, betel nut peel, 1 liang, sliced), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, siler root, 0.5 liang, remove rhizome head), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium rhizome and root, 0.5 liang), Sanggenbaipi (Mori Cortex, 1 liang, sliced), Chifuling (Polyporus, 1 liang), Yuliren (Pruni Semen, apricot seed, 1 liang, bran-fried).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved to make a powder. Each dose is 4 qian. Take one zhong zhan of water, add 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger). Decoct until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Take warm gently before meals.
For treating Hongjiao where swelling and fullness extend into the lower abdomen, drawing pain to both hypochondria, causing distending oppression, urgency inside the Bladder, retention of old fluids, failure to circulate and unblock, and occasional mental confusion as if intoxicated:
Chifuling (Polyporus, 3 fen), Sanggenbaipi (Mori Cortex, 3 fen, sliced), Zisujingye (Perillae Folium, perilla stem and leaf, 3 fen), Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 0.5 liang), Lingyangjiaoxie (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, saiga horn shavings, 0.5 liang), Yuliren (Pruni Semen, apricot seed, 1 liang, bran-fried).
Strain the dregs. Take at any time.
For treating Hongjiao with wind-toxin induced swelling and fullness, phlegm obstruction in the Heart and Diaphragm, irritability, and inability to eat, it is suitable to take Lingyangjiao San Decoction.
