The patient originally had no other pain, but was suddenly attacked by evil spirits (ghostly pathogens). At that moment, there was stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, or fainting and collapse, similar to Zhong'e disease (sudden collapse due to pathogenic invasion). After recovering from this acute phase, residual pathogenic qi does not dissipate; it stagnates for a long time and occasionally flares up, lingering continuously until death. After death, the pathogen may transmit to others, hence it is called "Gui Zhu" (Ghost Tethering/Infectious Disease).
For treating Gui Zhu with symptoms of heart and abdominal pain, severe restlessness, and feeling as if dying, the Muxiang San (Costus Powder) formula is suitable.
