The Lung Qi communicates with the nose. If the Zang organs are injured by cold wind, nasal Qi becomes obstructed, leading to nasal congestion (Bi Sai). This occurs because cold Qi condenses and accumulates, attacking the Blood and Qi, thereby generating polyps (Rou Zhu).
For nasal congestion, obstructed breathing, and stuffiness caused by external invasion of wind-cold, Xiong Yu San (Ligusticum and Areca Nut Powder) is indicated.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong Radix), Areca Seed (Binglang), Ginseng Root and Rhizome (Renshen, removed rhizome head), Red Poria (Chifuling), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, removed roots and joints), Cinnamon Twig (Rougui, removed wrinkled bark), and Prunus Sibirica Seed (Yuliren, soaked in decoction).
Process these ingredients by pounding and sieving into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until the volume reduces to seven-tenths. Strain off the dregs. Take warm after meals.
For nasal congestion and loss of smell (Bu Wen Xiang Chou), Mutong San (Akebia and Saposhnikovia Powder) is indicated.
Ingredients: Akebia Stem (Mutong, 1 liang, crushed), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng, 0.5 liang, removed rhizome head), Gardenia Seed (Zhizi Ren, 0.5 liang), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Chuan Shengma, 1 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 2 liang), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, 3 liang, removed roots and joints).
Process these ingredients by pounding and sieving into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong zhan of water. Decoct until the volume reduces to six-tenths. Strain off the dregs. Take warm after meals.

Ingredients: Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Agastache Herb (Xuncao), Akebia Stem (Mutong), Asarum Root (Xixin), Prunus Mume Kernel (Ruiren, removed red skin and ground, each 1 liang), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 0.5 liang), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 0.5 liang), and Sheep Marrow (Yang Sui).
Process these ingredients by finely chopping. Place sheep marrow in a pan and melt it over slow fire. Then add the other herbs and decoct until Baizhi turns yellow. Filter through silk cloth to remove dregs. Store in a container.
For nasal obstruction, loss of smell, respiratory difficulty, and pain, Tong Bi Gao (Nasal Unblocking Ointment) is indicated.
Ingredients: Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 0.5 liang), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 0.5 liang), Akebia Stem (Mutong, 0.5 liang), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui, 3 fen), Asarum Root (Xixin, 3 fen), Polygonum Aristolochioides Herb (Mangcao, 3 fen), and Magnolia Flower Bud (Xinyi, 1 handful).
Process these ingredients by finely chopping. Decoct with 1 jin of lard until Baizhi turns yellow. Filter through silk cloth to remove dregs. Store in a non-leaky vessel. When cool, wrap in silk cloth into pills the size of a jujube pit.
For nasal congestion and obstructed breathing, an alternative formula is indicated.
Ingredients: Akebia Stem (Mutong, crushed), Asarum Root (Xixin), and Prepared Aconite Lateral Root (Fuzi, processed, cracked, removed skin and navel, each 1 liang).
Process these ingredients by pounding and sieving into a fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a jujube pit. Each night before sleep, insert one pill into the nostril. The condition will heal.
