Treats all types of cough, regardless of whether it is caused by external contraction of wind-cold, internal injury from cold and raw food, deficiency consumption with hemoptysis, or retention of phlegm-fluid. All these conditions can be treated.

Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove the rhizome base), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) (wash seven times in boiling water), Fuling (Poria), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) (remove starch), Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (remove bark, do not over-roast).
Crush the above herbs. Take four qian per dose, add one and a half zhan of water, five Xingren (Prunus Armeniacus Seed) (peeled and split, crushed), and five slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until six parts remain, strain, and take before meals. If caused by common cold, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) in equal amount. If the Spleen and Stomach are naturally robust, add Ying Suske (Papaveris Pericarpium) (remove veins, crush, soak in vinegar, and stir-fry) in equal amount. Add one Wumei (Mume Fructus) to each dose for decoction; the effect is particularly remarkable. This formula should not be used if there is vomiting, regurgitation, or nausea. Another method: remove Xingren and Renshen, double the dosage of Mahuang, add Shaoyao in the same amount as Mahuang, increase Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) by half. This is named Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), which greatly treats chronic cough lasting many years, copious sputum, insomnia at night, and specifically treats asthma and urgency associated with Jiaoxie (Foot Qi / Beriberi). Although this formula contains Mahuang, due to the presence of Guigui, it will not cause excessive sweating, so it can be taken safely. Another prescription: add Mahuang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren, Wuweizi, and Fuling in equal amounts, and double the amount of Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum); this is even more appropriate. Yet another prescription: use Zisuye (Perillae Folium), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Mahuang, Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Wuweizi, Xingren, and Gancao in equal amounts, with seven slices of Shengjiang and one Wumei, decoct and take. It is suitable for chronic cough lasting many years, Qi deficiency with asthma and urgency. The two formulas above contain Mahuang and are not suitable for persons who sweat easily.
Treats Phlegm-saliva formed by the qi of joy, anger, sorrow, thought, worry, fear, and shock, resembling broken cotton wadding or a plum pit stuck in the throat, impossible to expectorate or swallow. This is caused by the "Seven Qi" (seven emotional factors). It may also present with fullness and stuffiness in the Zhongwan region, discomfort of Qi mechanism, copious phlegm-saliva, upper asthma and urgency, difficulty in drinking, vomiting, regurgitation, and nausea. This formula is suitable for all such conditions. (From *Yijian Fang*)
Banxia (five liang), Fuling (four liang), Zisuye (two liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (three liang).
Crush the above herbs. Take four qian per dose, add one and a half zhan of water, seven slices of Shengjiang, and one Zao (Jujubae Fructus). Decoct until six parts remain, strain, and take hot, at any time. If caused by excessive thinking, leading to confusion between Yin and Yang and interference between clear and turbid Qi, resulting in white turbid urine, taking Qingzhou Bai Wanzi (Qingzhou White Pills) with this medicine is most appropriate. It is especially suitable for women with Ezu (morning sickness during pregnancy). This formula is also known as Houpo Banxia Tang (Magnolia Bark and Pinellia Decoction) or Da Qi Qi Tang (Great Seven Qi Decoction). The *Ju Fang* (Prescriptions of the Bureau for the Care of the People) contains a Qi Qi Tang using five liang of Banxia, one liang each of Renshen, Guigui, and Gancao, decocted with Shengjiang, mainly treating Qi Qi disorders and severe pain in the heart and abdomen. However, the taste is too sweet, and it may not necessarily stop pain or regulate Qi. Another prescription treats injuries from the Seven Emotions, causing discomfort in the Zhongwan region, failure of Qi to ascend and descend, and distension and fullness in the abdomen and hypochondrium. Use Chao Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried) eight ounces, Juhong six liang, and Gancao one liang, decoct and take; this is particularly excellent. Some critics claim it depletes Qi, but this is incorrect. One takes the medicine corresponding to the disease.
