[Muli San (Oyster Shell Powder)]
Treats various deficiencies and insufficiencies, as well as sudden debility resulting from recent illness. It addresses the failure of Jin Ye (Body Fluids) to be secured, frequent spontaneous sweating during daily activities, which worsens at night during sleep. If prolonged without cessation, it leads to emaciation and wasting, palpitations with fright and timidity, shortness of breath, and irritability with fatigue.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, remove sprouts and soil) Mahuanggen (Ephedrae Radicis Caulis, wash) Muli (Ostreae Concha, soak in rice-washing water, brush off soil, burn with fire until thoroughly red, each one tael).
The above three ingredients are processed into a coarse powder. For each dose, take three qian, add one dan and a half of water, and over one hundred grains of Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus), decoct together until reduced to eight fen. Strain the dregs, and take hot. Take twice daily, at any time.
[Fazhi Shuai Ai (Processed Matured Mugwort)]
Mainly used for moxibustion to treat all diseases.
Chenjiu Huang Ai (Old yellow mugwort, quantity not limited): Select leaves, place in a mortar, and gently pound with a wooden pestle until soft. Pass through a fine sieve to remove green residues. Pound again and sieve again. Repeat this process three times. Then pass through a horsehair sieve, pound again, and sieve again, until the texture is soft, fine, and the color is yellow and mature.
The above processed mugwort is mainly used for moxibustion to treat all diseases. People performing moxibustion often lack standard procedures, merely enduring pain, rarely curing diseases. Now, extracting methods for selecting acupoint measurements, making moxa cone sizes, and the number of moxibustion units (Zhuang) from medical texts such as *Shenghui Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, and *Waitai Mi Yao*, as follows:
Method for determining measurements: Take the inner side of the second joint of the middle finger of male patients' left hand or female patients' right hand. Measure the distance between the two transverse creases as one cun. All selected acupoints and moxa cone measurements should follow this method.
Method for marking acupoints: When marking acupoints, the body must be kept straight. The four limbs should not be curled up. When marking while sitting, do not lean forward or backward; when marking while standing, do not tilt. If the acupoint position during moxibustion is incorrect, it will be of no benefit to treating the disease, only burning muscle tissue and causing unnecessary pain. If marked while sitting, perform moxibustion while sitting; if marked while lying down, perform moxibustion while lying down; if marked while standing, perform moxibustion while standing. Doing otherwise will result in missing the correct acupoint.
Method for making moxa cones: When applying fire for moxibustion, the base of the moxa cone must have a width of three fen and a length of three fen. If smaller than this, it will not reach the acupoint, fail to penetrate the meridians, prevent the movement of fire qi, and thus cannot eliminate the disease. For robust individuals, the size can be slightly increased. For infants under one year old, make them the size of wheat grains.
Method for igniting: Historically, using wood fire for moxibustion was taboo due to eight types of wood. Currently, do not use wood fire on humans to avoid various afflictions and to treat chronic ailments. Use pure oil to light a lamp, burn the stem of mugwort on the lamp flame to ignite it for moxibustion. This also moistens the moxibustion sore, ensuring no pain until healing. Using candles is even better. Another method is using a crystal lens to focus sunlight onto mugwort to generate fire; this type of fire is excellent for moxibustion. Alternatively, reflecting sunlight with a mirror to ignite mugwort is also good.
Timing for applying moxibustion fire: Perform moxibustion after solar noon. This time is referred to as "Yin Qi has not yet arrived," and moxibustion performed then is invariably effective. In the morning before noon, Gu Qi (Grain Qi) is weak, which can cause dizziness and vertigo. Do not perform moxibustion while lying down at this time; be extremely cautious. These are the general principles, but urgent cases should not be bound by these rules. If encountering foggy rain, snow, wind, sudden heavy rain, extreme heat, thunderstorms, or rainbows, pause temporarily. Wait for clear weather to resume moxibustion. During moxibustion, do not perform it when overly full, excessively hungry, intoxicated, or after eating raw/hard foods. Also, avoid mental states such as excessive thinking, sorrow, anger, shouting, cursing, sighing, and other inauspicious behaviors. Observing these taboos brings great auspiciousness.
Method for treating moxibustion sores that do not suppurate: When treating diseases with moxibustion, regardless of the season, although the number of moxa cones may be sufficient, if the sore does not develop pus, the disease will not heal. *Jia Yi Jing* states: For moxibustion sores that do not suppurate, heat an old shoe sole and apply it as a warm compress. After three days, suppuration will occur, and the disease will naturally heal. Currently, use three to five stalks of red-skin scallions, remove the green tops, roast them in ash fire until cooked, crush them, and apply as a hot compress to the moxibustion sore for about ten repetitions. The sore will spontaneously open within three days, burst, release pus, and the disease will quickly heal.
Method for washing moxibustion sores: Immediately after stopping moxibustion, decoct red-skin scallions and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) in water. Warmly wash the area around the moxibustion sore (approximately one to two cun) to expel wind pathogens from the sore opening. This also promotes the flow of meridians, preventing stagnation below the sore, allowing the sore to heal naturally. After the moxibustion sore sheds its scab, decoct branches from the southeast side of a peach tree and tender green peach bark in equal parts. Warmly wash the sore with this decoction. These two ingredients specifically protect against wind pathogens in the moxibustion sore. If the sore inside is black, rotten, and ulcerated, add Xusu (Coriandri Fructus) and decoct the three ingredients in equal parts. Warmly wash the sore, and healthy flesh will naturally grow. If the moxibustion sore causes unbearable pain and persists for a long time, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and decoct the four ingredients in equal parts. Wash with this decoction for immediate miraculous effect.
Method for determining the number of moxibustion units (Zhuang): *Qianjin Fang* states: "Regarding the number of Zhuang: for robust individuals with deep-rooted diseases, the number can be doubled compared to standard prescriptions; for elderly, young, or emaciated individuals, the number can be halved. According to Bian Que's moxibustion method, some cases involve up to five hundred or one thousand Zhuang, all determined based on temporary conditions."
Method for deducing the location of Ren Shen (Human Spirit): Day 1: Big toe; Day 2: Lateral malleolus; Day 3: Inner thigh; Day 4: Waist; Day 5: Mouth, tongue, pharynx, uvula; Day 6: Little toe; Day 7: Medial malleolus; Day 8: Ankle; Day 9: Sacrum; Day 10: Back, waist; Day 11: Nasal bridge; Day 12: Hairline; Day 13: Teeth; Day 14: Epigastrium; Day 15: Whole body; Day 16: Chest, breasts; Day 17: Qichong (ST30); Day 18: Abdomen interior; Day 19: Dorsum of foot; Day 20: Below knee; Day 21: Little finger of hand; Day 22: Futu (ST32); Day 23: Ganshu (BL18); Day 24: Hand Yangming Meridian, lateral hypochondrium; Day 25: Foot Yangming Meridian; Day 26: Hands, feet; Day 27: Knee; Day 28: Genitals; Day 29: Knee, calf, temple, hairline; Day 30: From Guanyuan (CV4) down to the sole of the foot. On these days when Ren Shen is located, moxibustion is contraindicated. However, in urgent pathological conditions, these rules do not apply.
