Treats Heart Wind (Xin Feng), characterized by manic running and epilepsy.
Carp Gallbladder (Liyu Dan), Chicken Gallbladder (Ji Dan), Dog Gallbladder (Gou Dan), Pig Gallbladder (Zhu Dan), Sheep Gallbladder (Yang Dan) (one of each, extract the juice and mix together); Shehuang (Ore of Magnetite or similar mineral, 5 liang, calcined over fire, dipped in gallbladder juice until fully absorbed).
Grind the above into powder. Separately, use Dog Gallbladder Juice (Gou Dan Zhi) as a binder to form pills the size of mung beans, coated with Cinnabar (Zhusha). Take 15 pills per dose, swallowed after meals with water used for sharpening knives. Alternatively, prepare as a powder and take mixed with knife-sharpening water.
Treats all types of epilepsy and wind-induced mania in men and women, whether caused by fright and terror, or postpartum blood deficiency in women where fright qi enters the Heart vessels and circulates, causing accumulation of fright and stagnation. This formula has proven effective repeatedly. Originally, it was transmitted by a monk to the son of King Zhongyi when he fell ill; it was then named Lingsha Guanyin Dan. King Zhongyi did not dare to trust it initially. Later, a mad dog was fed this medicine and recovered immediately. Upon dissecting the dog, it was found that the dog had been holding its own gallbladder. Hence, the name was changed to the current one.
Mercury (Shuiyin, 2 liang); Cinnabar (Zhusha, 1 liang, finely ground); Black Lead (Heiqian, 1.5 liang); Frankincense (Ruxiang, 1 liang, finely ground).
First, place the Black Lead in a dingzi (metal pot), add Mercury to form granules. Then add Cinnabar and dripping Frankincense. While hot, pound and grind evenly using a willow wood pestle. Form into pills the size of a chicken head. Take one pill per dose, swallowed on an empty stomach with well-water drawn at dawn (Jinghua Shui). The patient will fall asleep; do not disturb them. Upon waking, they will be stable. Take another pill to eradicate the root cause.
Treats epilepsy caused by Qi stagnation.
Use high-quality Qingmengshi (Fluorite Ore, 1 liang), grind into powder, and mix evenly with Yanxiao (Saltpeter/Niter, 1 liang). Place in a gan guo (pot), heat over charcoal fire until red-hot, until completely melted. Cool down; the color becomes like gold. Grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with natural Mint Juice (Bohe Zijian) and honey, taken warm. After some time, the medicine will naturally wrap around phlegm and expel it. It may appear mixed with stool, thick and sticky like glue, which is the effect of the medicine.
Treats epilepsy transformed from Wind Pathogen, occurring intermittently with loss of consciousness. Aims to calm the Spirit (Shen) and treat wind-epilepsy. Attacks occur at irregular times; during an attack, the patient falls to the ground, foams at the mouth, and loses awareness. This is primarily due to deficiency of both Blood and Qi, dispersion of Spirit and Essence, loss of control over Hun and Po, and invasion of Wind Pathogen into Yin meridians. Another etiology involves sudden severe fright experienced by the mother early in pregnancy, causing essence and qi to congregate, leading to fetal epilepsy. The symptoms are largely similar to wind-epilepsy.
Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, separately ground); Pearl (Zhenzhu, separately ground); Amber (Hupo, separately ground); Iron Powder (Tiefen, separately ground); Tiansuzhu Huang (Calculus Indicus, separately ground); Longchi (Dragon Teeth/Fossilized Teeth, separately ground); Moschus (Shexiang, specifically the black-hearted part); Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng); Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao); Mercury (Shuiyin), Cinnabar (Dansha), Gold Leaf (Jinbo) (these four ingredients ground together); Changpu (Acorus Tatarinowii, soaked in rice wash water, sliced, stir-fried with wine); White Peony Root (Baishao).
Except for the ingredients requiring separate grinding, pulverize the remaining herbs into fine powder. Add the separately ground ingredients and sieve again to ensure uniformity. Mix appropriately with refined Honey (Lianmi), and pound for a thousand strokes. Form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 15–20 pills with decoction of fresh Bamboo Leaves (Xinzhuye) before sleep and after meals.
