Joy and Pleasure: Maintain a joyful and harmonious state of mind. The patient should stimulate their own faith and confidence regarding the acupoints being needled.
Confession: Self-reflect and verbally acknowledge past faults that led to illness, promising that from now on, after acupuncture treatment, such mistakes will never be repeated again.
Self-Correction (Physician): When attending to the patient, the physician must look straight ahead without sidelong glances and harbor no wicked or distracting thoughts in the heart.
Nourishing Spirit: Both the physician and the patient must rectify and stabilize their own spiritual consciousness.
Viewing the Thighs (Modesty Protocol): When treating female patients or unmarried women, measure the area of one square cun around the selected acupoint, and then insert the needle through the clothing.
Strict Etiquette: Those who request medical treatment must possess sincere intention and faithfulness, behaving with the respect due to honored guests.
Rectifying the Gaze: Whenever using needles, the physician must focus intently on one eye, avoiding distractions elsewhere, and calmly visualize the changes in the condition and the arrival of Qi.
Incantation: When using needles, the physician must silently recite the incantation: "Great is the Primal Power of Heaven; may it accomplish the work of Heaven. Where the divine needle reaches, ten thousand diseases are removed as if plucked away. Act swiftly according to the law and decree."
Daily Life (During Waiting for Qi): During the period of stopping the needle and waiting for Qi arrival, instruct the patient to sit or lie down in a straight, upright posture.
Visualization: When needling patients, if the mind is free from wicked thoughts, pathogenic factors can be easily eliminated. When selecting acupoints, ensure the patient sits or lies straight so that needle insertion proceeds smoothly and quickly.
Regulating Anger/Resentment: During the period of stopping the needle and waiting for Qi arrival, instruct the patient to forget worries and cut off excessive deliberation, avoiding sudden anger or joy that might disturb the Heart spirit.
Cutting Off Deliberation: If during the period of stopping the needle and waiting for Qi arrival, the patient should be guided to forget worries and eliminate excessive mental rumination.
Joy (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, patients must strictly avoid sudden excessive joy. Joy damages the Shen (Spirit); once the Shen is damaged, old ailments will not heal, and new diseases will arise.
Anger (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, patients must not be allowed to become suddenly angry. Anger damages the Liver; when the Hun (Ethereal Soul) becomes unsettled, blood loses its proper return and containment, leading to the onset of various diseases.
Worry/Sorrow (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, patients must not be allowed to become suddenly overly sorrowful. Sorrow damages the Heart; once the Heart is damaged, fatigue harms the Spleen. When the Spleen is impaired, food residues cannot be transformed properly, True Qi declines daily, and the pathways of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi become obstructed.
Fear (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, patients must not be allowed to become suddenly frightened. Fear damages the Kidney; once the Kidney is damaged, the Zhi (Willpower) is impaired. When Willpower is impaired, the way of preserving health is lost.
Pensiveness/Overthinking (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, patients must not be subjected to bitter or excessive thinking. Pensiveness damages Qi; when Qi is exhausted and Blood stagnates, muscles lose their smoothness and luster.
Labor/Fatigue (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, patients must not engage in physical labor or exertion. Labor damages Qi; when Qi is depleted, old ailments persist, and new diseases arise.
Intoxication (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, heavy drunkenness is prohibited. Intoxication causes an excess of Blood and Qi but depletes Wei (Defensive) Qi. When Wei Qi is depleted, Ying (Nutritive) Blood inevitably escapes or collapses.
Fullness/Overeating (Post-Acupuncture Taboo): For several days after acupuncture, overeating is prohibited. Fullness damages the sinews and vessels, causing them to relax and leading to abnormal fullness and overflow of blood.
