Qibo in the *Mingtang Jing* (Classic of the Bright Hall) stated: Use eight cun as one chi, and eight fen as one cun. This is because people vary in height and body shape; without a standardized measurement, acupoint selection would be inaccurate.
Bianque in the *Mingtang* stated: For men, use the left hand; for women, use the right hand. The length of the second segment of the middle finger is taken as one cun. This accounts for variations where some have long bodies but short hands, or short bodies but long hands; otherwise, acupoint selection would be inaccurate.
Sun Simiao in the *Mingtang* stated: For male patients, use the left hand; for female patients, use the right hand. The transverse crease of the first segment of the thumb is taken as one cun. One must judge flexibly based on circumstances; skill varies from person to person, leading to potential discrepancies.
Currently, we adopt the method of taking the distance between the two transverse creases within the second segment of the middle finger of the left hand for men and the right hand for women as one cun. Since adopting this measurement standard for moxibustion treatment, most diseases have been cured. This method is reliable and is now established as the fixed standard.
When applying moxibustion to the head and four limbs, excessive moxibustion should be avoided. The human body has 365 collaterals that all converge at the head, which is the meeting point of all Yang meridians. Excessive moxibustion on the head can cause dizziness, vertigo, and blurred vision. Because the muscles of the head and limbs are thin, simultaneous extensive moxibustion may cause Qi and Blood stagnation, preventing them from flowing downward. It is advisable to pause the application of heat for a while to allow Qi and Blood to circulate freely, then resume until the required number of moxa cones is completed. Illness will naturally be expelled. This requires careful observation.
When marking acupoints for moxibustion, the body must remain straight, and the four limbs should not be curled. When sitting, avoid leaning forward or backward; when standing, avoid tilting. If the acupoints are not accurately located, the treatment will be ineffective, resulting only in burning healthy tissue and causing unnecessary pain. In treating illness, apply moxibustion to the upper parts first, then the lower parts; apply to fewer points first, then more points. This requires careful deliberation.
In moxibustion therapy, regardless of the season (spring, summer, autumn, or winter), if the number of moxa cones is sufficient and the moxa sore develops pus and ulcerates, the disease will heal. If the moxa sore does not develop pus and ulcerate, the disease will not resolve. The *Jia Yi Jing* (Classics of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) states: If the moxa sore does not erupt, one may use the "shoe sole moxibustion" method. Currently, using hot compresses, pus will emerge after three days, and the disease will naturally heal. Now, take three to five stalks of red-skin green onion, remove the green tops, roast them in sugar ash until cooked, crush them, and apply as a hot compress to the moxa sore for over ten times. The sore will naturally erupt, ulcerate, and discharge pus within three days, leading to recovery.
