51. Chantui San (Cicada Slough Powder). Indicated for eruptive diseases (such as smallpox or chickenpox) beginning to manifest, with body heat resembling Taiyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Taiyang channel), coldness only at the ear tips and feet, or accompanied by abdominal pain and constipation; this indicates an eruptive disease.
Take twenty-one pieces of Cicada Slough (Periostracum Cicadae), wash away the mud, and grind into powder. Add one cup of water, simmer slowly over low heat until half a cup remains, strain off the dregs, and administer warm according to the child's age and size. If the eruption has already appeared, continue to take it three to five times as previously described; even if it is not an eruptive disease, there is no harm in taking it. When a child's eruptive disease is about to emerge, add one qian and a half of Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae), simmer to half a cup, and administer frequently in small amounts; this has proven effective repeatedly. The accumulated heat-toxin within children can be restrained by Cicada Slough, which is salty and cold in nature. Furthermore, for sudden contraction of wind causing heat that lodges in the exterior, Cicada Slough also treats wind-toxin filling the skin, causing unceasing itching, convulsions, night crying, epilepsy with alternating chills and fever, palpitations due to fright—all of which are suitable for treatment with this herb.
52. Houli Jiu (Monkey Pear Wine). Indicated for slow or difficult eruption of pox.
Monkey Pears (five fruits, also known as Mountain Fruits).
Simmer in wine, add water, soak, and drink; the pox will then erupt.
53. Mahuang Zicao Tang (Ephedra and Lithospermum Decoction). Indicated for eruptions failing to appear.
Ephedra Stem (Ephedrae Herba, remove nodes) and Ginseng Root (Ren Shen, Radix Ginseng) (each 1 fen); Apricot Seed (Xing Ren, Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (seven seeds, remove skin and tips).
Grind the above into coarse powder. For each dose, use two qian, add two cups of water and five cun of Lithospermum Root (Zi Cao, Radix Arnebiae/Lithospermi), decoct together until one cup remains, strain, and divide into three or four doses to be taken over two days. Other medicines may be administered subsequently.
54. Shuijie San (Water-Resolving Powder). Indicated for slow or difficult eruption of pox, restlessness preventing sleep, or persistent body heat after eruption.
Rhubarb Rhizome (Da Huang, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin, Radix Scutellariae), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin, Ramulus Cinnamomi), Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), and Peony Root (Shaoyao, Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra) (each 2 qian); Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, Ephedrae Herba, remove nodes) (4 liang).
Grind the above into powder. After the patient bathes in a mixture of raw and boiled water, mix two qian of the powder with warm water and ingest. Follow with a second dose; recovery occurs upon sweating and free bowel movement. Robust individuals may take two fangcun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful). This formula suits those with excess wind-pathogen and is suitable even during the dog days of summer. If Rhubarb is omitted, it becomes a general formula for spring and summer. Generally, when people consume alcohol or melons/fruits, they bathe in raw/boiled water mixtures to dissipate the qi of these substances. By analogy, bathing with this formula first helps expel toxins from the body.
55. Xuanshen Shengma Tang (Scrophularia and Cimicifuga Decoction). Indicated for wind-cold or wind-heat contracting exogenous pathogens, phlegm-fire, or food stagnation, where heat circulates in the muscles, or after sweating or purging methods have failed to disperse toxic qi. It addresses deficiency on the exterior and excess on the interior, with heat manifesting externally, resulting in macules resembling brocade patterns; severe cases involve restlessness and delirium. Also indicated for throat obstruction with swelling and pain.
Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen, Radix Scrophulariae), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma, Rhizoma Cimicifugae), and Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (equal parts).
Cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Take three qian per dose, add one small cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
56. Mahuang Huangqin Tang (Ephedra and Scutellaria Decoction). Indicated for slow or difficult eruption of pox, restlessness preventing sleep.
Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, Ephedrae Herba, remove nodes) (1 liang), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, Radix Scutellariae), and Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao, Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (each ban liang); Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) and Official Cinnamon Bark (Guangui, Cortex Cinnamomi) (each 1 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with warm water, three times daily. Also indicated for epidemic heat qi and slow eruption of variola (smallpox), particularly when accompanied by restlessness, confusion, or persistent body heat and pain after eruption.
57. Shengma Huangqin Tang (Cimicifuga and Scutellaria Decoction). Indicated for slow or difficult eruption of pox, restlessness preventing sleep.
Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma, Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, Radix Scutellariae), Kudzu Root (Gegen, Puerariae Lobatae Radix), and Peony Root (Shaoyao, Radix Paeoniae) (each 3 qian); Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian and a half).
Cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Take two qian per dose, add one medium cup of water, decoct until six-tenths remain, strain, and take warm. For epidemic pox with slow eruption, restlessness, and insomnia, add Costus Root (Muxiang, Radix Aucklandiae) (1 qian and a half).
58. Gegen San (Kudzu Powder). Indicated for epidemic heat-toxin qi, impending eruption of pox, with intense heat and pain; suitable for resolving the muscle layer and inducing sweating.
Kudzu Root (Gegen, Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, Ephedrae Herba) (each 1 liang); Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, Gypsum) (2 liang); Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, Radix Scutellariae), Peony Root (Shaoyao, Radix Paeoniae), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, Ramulus Cinnamomi), and Licorice Root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each ban liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take four qian per dose, add one cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time. Omit Ephedra if the patient is already sweating spontaneously.
