Forty-one. Huixu Wine (Coriander Wine). Used to treat infants who initially show signs of discomfort, where the syndrome differentiation indicates chuangzhen (exanthematous diseases such as smallpox or measles), whether the rash has erupted or not yet, with the aim of promoting rapid eruption. Since irritability, pain, and itching associated with sores and ulcers originate from the Heart, and Coriander (Huixi) is pungent in flavor and can unblock the Heart orifices, decocting it in wine and spraying it allows the rash to erupt immediately. The Heart governs sores and ulcers, irritability, pain and itching, and palpitations with fright. All these symptoms are essential for chuangzhen syndromes; thus, Huixi unblocks the Heart orifices, and once unblocked, the rash erupts easily. However, if the syndrome is differentiated as chuangzhen but the patient has loose stools, neither Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Rhizoma) nor Huixi should be used, likely because Zicao is cold in nature and Huixi promotes bowel movement in the Large Intestine. In such cases, one should first warm and tonify until the Zang-Fu organs function normally; if the chuangzhen syndrome persists, this formula is appropriate.
Take three liang of Huixi, finely chopped, and two large cups of wine. Boil the wine, pour it over the Huixi, cover tightly immediately to prevent the vapor from escaping, let it cool, strain off the dregs, and gently apply between the forehead, cheeks, and eyes. Spray the back, spine, both feet, chest, and abdomen evenly, avoiding direct application to the center of the face. Qian Yi's method uses two cups of good wine, boiled briefly, then add four liang of Huixi and boil again. It is also stated that there should always be the scent of Huixi around the patient, above and below, left and right, to dispel sweat odor and foul air, facilitating rapid eruption of the rash. Avoid contact with outsiders and filthy objects. Although wind and cold must be avoided, excessive confinement should also be prevented; clothing should be moderate, and the patient should sit and lie in a ventilated, cool place.
Forty-two. Grape Wine. Used to treat exanthematous diseases caused by epidemic qi that fail to erupt.
Grind grapes and mix with wine for drinking. Grapes have a sweet and neutral flavor and promote urination; this utilizes the symbolism of grape clusters shedding quickly to represent the rapid eruption of the rash.
Forty-three. Burned Chi Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Pig Claws.
Zhang Zhongjing stated that during the phase when chuangzhen is attempting to erupt from the exterior, one should burn Chi Zhu (which is Cang Zhu, Atractylodis Rhizoma) and pig claws in the living quarters to ward off foul odors. Parents should abstain from sexual desires and ensure others guard the doors and windows, preventing outsiders from entering the room to avoid taboo violations that might hinder the eruption of the child's rash. If violated, mild cases may present with panting and yellowish-green complexion. Fatalities due to such violations are countless; caution is imperative.
Forty-four. Burning Ru Xiang (Frankincense). Method for fumigating chuangzhen.
When chuangzhen is actively erupting, all foul odors must be avoided as they obstruct the flow of Ying and Wei Qi, potentially causing the rash to collapse inward or invert. Continuous burning of Ru Xiang in the living quarters removes foul odors and is effective for chuangzhen.
Forty-five. Application of Yellow Earth Powder. For eruptions that have already appeared, exterior-releasing methods should not be used. Repeated use of exterior-releasing methods will worsen ulceration. If pus-filled lesions cause severe pain, apply fine powder of clean yellow earth to the affected area. Consuming honey frequently is also beneficial.
Forty-six. Mangxiao (Mirabilite) and Pig Bile. If ulceration occurs due to improper care or excessive use of exterior-releasing methods, resulting in confluent patches on hands, feet, face, head, abdomen, and back that are distressing to behold, mix Mangxiao and pig bile and apply to the sores without disturbing them. Wait until the scabs fall off. For extensive non-healing wounds causing restlessness in bed, lying on a mat woven from wheat bran is advisable for recuperation.
Forty-seven. Black Cow Manure Ash Application. For chuangzhen that have erupted but not yet flattened. Strictly avoid contact with strangers, as the exertion of laborers or the odor of fox-like body odor may interfere. Do not expose to wind before healing, as wind exposure leads to scarring. If pus discharges, apply black cow manure ash to accelerate healing and prevent scarring.
Forty-eight. Huangbo Paste (Phellodendron Paste). After pediatric chuangzhen erupts, protect the face and eyes from contamination. Before spraying Huixu Wine, apply this paste to the face, then spray the limbs. This is suitable for adults and infants alike.
Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 liang), Lv Dou (Mung Bean, 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 4 liang, raw).
Pulverize the ingredients, grind finely, and mix with raw sesame oil to form a thin paste. Apply thickly three to five times to the areas anterior to the ears, around the eyes, and lips. After applying to the face, Huixu Wine may be sprayed. Applying this paste in the morning prevents the generation of rashes. If applied late, even if rashes appear, they will be fewer. Various texts regarding facial protection use this formula with identical dosages and methods, except for the "Lun Zhen Dou" text, which specifies using 3.5 qian of Yuan Dou powder per batch.
Forty-nine. Baijiezi Powder (White Mustard Seed Powder). Used to treat pediatric chuangzhen and prevent the rash from affecting the eyes.
Grind Baijiezi into powder, mix with water, and apply to the soles of the feet to prevent the rash from entering the eyes.
Fifty. Rotten Meat Juice for Treating Pea Pox.
Wash the affected area with rotten meat juice; dried meat jerky is also acceptable.
