To treat chronic abdominal distension.
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Luobozǐ (Raphani Fructus), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen) (equal parts).
Grind the above into a fine powder, mix with water paste to make pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take ten pills each time, administered on an empty stomach with Zisu Tang (Perilla Decoction).
Another prescription: For treating abdominal distension where there is a long-standing history of diarrhea, evacuating several sheng (a traditional unit of volume) daily without cease, and previous medications have been ineffective, this indicates Qi collapse. This prescription is suitable.
Boil Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) in strong decoction and take it; recovery will be immediate.
To treat turbid Qi stagnating in the upper jiao, which generates distension.
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Caodoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus wrapped in flour and baked), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma soaked in rice wash water, 3 fen), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex processed with ginger juice, 4 fen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 fen), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride peeled, remove white pith), Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), Baifuling (Poria Cocos with skin removed), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Ganshengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens dried), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus soaked in hot water), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each of the above 2 fen), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 1 fen).
The *Neijing* states: "For what remains stagnant, move it; for what is knotted, disperse it." Using the bitter and neutral properties of Chaihu and Shengma to circulate through the Shaoyang and Yangming meridians, dispersing clear Qi and circulating within the Yang division, serving as the Sovereign drug. Using the acrid, sweet, and great heat properties of Shengjiang, Banxia, Caodoukou, and Yizhiren to dissipate middle-jiao cold, serving as the Minister drug. Using the bitter, acrid, and great warm properties of Houpo, Muxiang, Cangzhu, and Qingpi to unblock stagnant Qi. Using the acrid, sweet, and warm properties of Danggui, Chenpi, and Renshen to harmonize Ying and Wei, and nourish Middle Qi. For turbid Qi that does not descend, use bitter drugs to drain it; the bitter and hot property of Wuzhuyu serves to drain it. Subtle aromas belong to Yin within Yang; Fuling is sweet and neutral, Zexie is salty and neutral. Their subtle aromas guide turbid Yin Qi downward from the Heaven level, thus serving as the Assistant drug. The combination of flavors and aromas disperses and drains, moving upward and downward, allowing Clear and Turbid Qi to reside in their proper positions. Lady Fan Tianxiang, previously due to overwork and irregular diet, compounded by worry and thought causing Qi knotting, suffered from cardiac and abdominal distension and fullness, unable to eat dinner if she ate breakfast, with stabbing pain in both hypochondria. Her pulse was wiry and thin. At night, when Turbid Yin Qi should descend but fails to do so, distension becomes particularly severe. Generally, Yang governs transformation and transportation. Diet and fatigue damage the Spleen and Stomach; Yang Qi cannot transform and transport essence and micro-nutrients, leading to accumulation without dispersion, thus causing distension and fullness. First, moxa the Zhongwan (CV12) point, the Front-Mu point of the Stomach, to guide the ascending Qi of the Stomach up the Yang pathways, assisted by the aforementioned herbs, so that Turbid Yin Qi descends from here.
Chop the above ingredients, combine as one dose. Use two cups of water, boil down to one cup, remove dregs, and take warm before meals. Avoid raw, cold, and hard foods.
