In the fifth year of Gandao era, a group of bandits in Xiangyang were about to be executed, but an imperial decree specifically pardoned them from death penalty. Several days prior, the Prefect of the Zhou feared they would cause harm after release. After sentencing them to corporal punishment, he applied raw lacquer to their eyes. When they arrived at the prison gate together, they were already blind. They were detained under the custody of Changlin County runners, with official correspondence transmitted via talisman. An old man, imprisoned for other matters, warned and advised them: "When you leave tomorrow, ask your escorts to urgently find crabs nearby on the right side, crush them, filter the juice, and drip it into your eyes. The lacquer will flow out with the juice and disperse, and the eye damage will heal." Following this advice, they found a small crab and used it. After staying for three days, they departed; their vision recovered completely with no impairment. My nephew-in-law Zhu Xishuo, who was serving as the Magistrate of Dangyang County at the time, personally witnessed this event while reporting to the County Magistrate.
Chen Zhaolang, a native of Anji, Huzhou, drank two mouthfuls of stream water due to thirst in spring. A few days later, he experienced heart and abdominal pain, which intensified over time despite medication. Physicians diagnosed: "Heart and spleen poisoned by ingested toxins, now the heart pulse is severely damaged." Chen replied: "Last year, due to spring thirst, I drank stream water and contracted this illness." The physician stated: "You ingested excrement left by a snake near the stream, which entered the water. The snake has formed inside you, feeding on your heart, causing pain." He then administered Xionghuang (Realgar) mixed with water. Indeed, several red snakes were expelled, all capable of moving.
